Margaux is a wine from Bordeaux. Margot is a girl's name.

I had a French colleague with this name.

FayCarew · 29/04/2024 20:53

@pinkmags , but Prince Louis is 'Prins Louie'

pinkmags · 29/04/2024 20:36

I’ve never met an English person who pronounced Louis Lou-is. The way to spell that is Lewis.

There are often more than one way to spell names. In English (and many other non French languages) Louis is pronounced phonetically as Lou-is because English pronounced the S.

Outside of France, most countries pronounce Louis as Lou-is, certainly in central Europe and the US eg the city of St Louis is Missouri.

I've seen the spelling Louie in the UK if you want a more Anglophile version.

Yes it is but it is also the most usual spelling of the girls name in France!
MN frenchies, please back me up

In the same way that Louie is a common spelling of Louis in the U.K.

There are still people who pronounce Louis as it’s spelt Lou-is . So if that’s how you will pronounce it will appear less French. When I was at primary school there was a Louis , his name was pronounced as it was spelt Lou-is so that plays a role

Edited

Yeah but with Prince Louis on the scene that is less likely

theduchessofspork · 28/04/2024 18:32

No, they are both popular and have been used here for a long time

It’s a nice combination

Noyoky · 28/04/2024 13:00

Both really lovely and definitely not too French .

FayCarew · 28/04/2024 12:56

@rosemarylavendar , Margaux is slightly more popular but Margot isn't far behind.

In France, it is spelled Margaux.

Another who thinks it will be fine. It wouldn't even have crossed my mind that they were both French names.

pinkmags · 22/04/2024 19:13

Or Margaret in the UK

pinkmags · 22/04/2024 19:12

Margaux is the more popular in France.

I would use that spelling as Margot is pronounced Mar-Gott in some languages (eg German)

Mumoftwo1312 · 22/04/2024 12:50

You could anglicise Margot to Margo which I prefer tbh. You'd get fewer people pronouncing it Mar Got.

Louis is one of the princes right? So not too French.

Lassiata · 22/04/2024 12:49

No, they've been used in England for yonks.

Partly depends how you intend to pronounce Louis I guess.

Yes Margot is originally a diminutive of Marguerite/ Margaret.

I have seen Margaux more often than Margot in France, and always wondered if it was a "yoonique" spelling. I'm not French though.

FayCarew · 22/04/2024 12:39

Penelope Keith's character was Margo

Crapuscular · 22/04/2024 12:37

I'm under the impression that Margot is one of the nicknames for Margaret.
I recall Penelope Keith's character being called that in The Good Life in the 70s.

Your choices are fine.

OctaviaRedQueen · 22/04/2024 12:29

That wouldn’t have crossed my mind.

Edenmum2 · 21/04/2024 21:38

Nah, I know so many of both and none of them are French. I don't really even think of Louis as a French name (not disputing that it is - just doesn't come to mind when I hear it)

You could spell it Louie? That might be less French?!

Arlanymor · 21/04/2024 21:23

FayCarew · 21/04/2024 20:32

@Arlanymor , the Princess of Wales is Catherine

Thanks for correcting my typo.
