Baby girl names

I am really struggling with baby girl names. Our boy name is Hudson and he would be named after someone whereas a girl wouldn't.
I like:
Milah- our friends used it 😢
Maela
Mylah
Lilah
Autumn

Hubby doesn't like any. Please suggest other slight unique names I might be able to get him to agree to ❤️

We can see this thread is quite old now but if you’ve landed here looking for baby naming inspo, our recently updated 1000 top girl names article may offer some ideas. Flowers

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I always liked Eleni which is Greek and otherwise I've only heard it when I lived in Australia.

Others may have suggested some of these already but:

Farrah
Delilah
Minna
Brontë
Hebe
Iona
Jessamine
Leila
Leonie
Mara
Tessa
Willa

There are so many amazing names!
I personally am not a fan of girls names ending in a as they can sound a bit lazy/made up sometimes.
But here's a few, with and without the a thing!
Don't be too 'unique.' Those kind of names can end up sounding trashy. Imagine your daughter is a 35 year old lawyer mother-of-one. Now choose a name that isn't going to make her cringe everytime she says it.

Eloise
Hannah
Lucy
Dorothea
Florence
Reya
Astrid
Leonora
Juliet
Dahlia
Polly
Violet
Siobhan
Nina
Christina
Mabel
Freya
Sara
Serena
Constance
Cecilie
Isla
Thea
Una
Etienne
Emmeline
Rebecca
Willa
Quinn
Alexandra
Genevieve
Meredith

A number of these names end in “a” 😂

PoppyCherryDog · 21/04/2024 10:24

I like Lilah and Autumn on your list. The others I think are a bit try hard for uniqueness but that may just be because I’ve never heard of them.

I like Maeva that others have suggested.

As a teacher, please don’t give your child a name that is very hard to pronounce (or work out how to say from how it is spelt). I often have pupils having to explain how their name is said (I always tell them to correct me if I get it wrong because they deserve to have their name said correctly) but if I only teach the child once a week sometimes they have to do this multiple times and I just think ‘oh bless you, you are going to have to do this forever’.
(I do get there in the end by the way, I end up jotting it down phonetically to try to help!)

Exactly. Some of those names are very ambiguous in their pronunciation, and your kid might have people with a very similar name which is pronounced differently in their class. When you have teachers who see 250+ children per day, some of whom they only see for an hour at a time, it’s really hard to deal with who pronounces their name what way.

I have an unusual but not “weird” name (it’s actually quite an old fashioned name, think along the lines of Edith in terms of simplicity) which is pronounced phonetically and it was still butchered by everyone because it’s similar to a few other names. I spent my entire childhood correcting people. Even now as an adult, people get my name wrong a lot. It drives me mad.

My daughter is Tahlia, pronounced Tar-lee-u. It's Hebrew and means little lamb. We used to call her our little lamb before I knew what it meant.
