Do you think it's odd to call a newborn Penelope when dog is called Penny? NN: Nel/Nellie 🐶 👶

It's absolutely fine.

How old is the dog?

Be aware that although they're pretty and classy, none of those Greek names travel well overseas (apart from Greece, obvs, and the USA). Viktor Krum's struggle to pronounce Hermione is based on fact IME.

I think it might depend on where overseas, and which name, but the problem is real. For example DD1's middle name is Aidan, according to her Russian visa: I don't know how they got Aidan from Athene, but hey ho.

Penelope is not a desirable name here in France IMO, because they butcher the pronunciation: PénéLOPP with no final E and a grotesque emphasis on the ugly LOPP sound. Pronunciation aside, I think I have an irrational hatred of the name because a horrible ex had a younger colleague named PénéLOPP who he kept trying to make me jealous of, with mentionitis of the fugly name. 😂

I think in spite of all that, it's a perfectly good name in most (?) places. Reminds me of Penelope Pitstop, who seems like a pretty cool role model.

“Like penne ala vodka!”

muddyford · 18/04/2024 13:25

A friend called her daughter Grace. Dog is Gracie...

Ems1992 · 18/04/2024 13:23

Penelope has always been my number one girl name, now I’m pregnant, and I’ve told people this, EVERYONE has said “oh, penny?” I’m like “no, Nell”. I think no matter what your child would not escape Penny. For that reason, I have gone back to the drawing board as Nell is nice, but dislike Penny a lot.
I think you can have an idea on nicknames but ultimately the most common short version (which in this case is Penny) will overcome all other names you try to put in place…
If you are happy with people calling your child the same as your dog… then yes great, if not, don’t 😂

SwordToFlamethrower · 15/04/2024 19:47

Gorgeous name!

Mohammammy · 15/04/2024 19:09

I think this is quite normal. Ultimately, names for children and pets can be chosen in different ways, and it often depends on personal preferences and family traditions. Some people like to choose names for their children that have special meaning or historical value, while for pets they may choose names that are more user-friendly or just something they like the sound of. If Penelope and Penny appeal to you and your family, then this is a wonderful choice!

CherrySocks · 11/04/2024 22:52

It is a bit odd, like there are no other names. But if you really want your daughter to be called Penelope maybe you could start calling the dog Bennie? (It's a female name in the Elton John song Bennie and the Jets).
(I'm not sure what NN: Nel/Nellie 🐶 👶 means. Do you call the dog Penny and Nell and Nellie?)

OctaviaRedQueen · 11/04/2024 22:44

I wouldn’t personally.

newrubylane · 10/04/2024 15:48

I love Penelope with Nell for short. We didn't use it because our surname begins with P and it felt a bit much! I would be a bit iffy on giving almost the same name as a pet though...

MalibuBarbieDreamHouse · 10/04/2024 15:40

I love the versatility of the name Penelope, most Penelopes I know do go by nicknames though, if not from family, from friends once at school etc and the most common nicknames are going to be pen, nell, nellie… something to consider OP.

CreateYourOwnUsername · 10/04/2024 11:51

I think the dog thing is probably fine. I know a family who did this with another name and it was quite funny, but just an amusing anecdote. Sorry to be morbid, but dogs don't live very long compared to humans! So chances are it won't be an issue for terribly long 😬

35andThriving · 10/04/2024 11:46

I know. It's just a thing that puts me off personally.

It was on my girls' name list. I had a son. When I found out that little fact though, it put me off and I was very glad I didn't unknowingly give it to a daughter.

However, i do realise that to some people , it wouldn't matter a bit, and that's fine. I wouldn't say it to anyone in rl.

HangrySheep · 10/04/2024 11:37

As a 'Penelope' in her late twenties, i can say the main issue would be that no one would ever call her Penelope. It would be shortened to Penny immediately and by everyone, and then there may be an issue if the dog has the same name!

Saying that, the dog sadly won't last for ever and i might be biased but i think Penny is a great name! I've never had any issues overseas including in Spain, foreign people usually would just say '...lope' rather than '...lopee' but like i say, aside from passports its always Penny

Anyone saying it's not a nice name probably has a boring name anyway 😅

Also, I would prefer to know this before I named a daughter Penelope - It does have the Spanish word for penis in it.

Well, quite a few Spanish Penelopes, starting with Penélope Cruz...

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 08/04/2024 23:44

Hmm l see the dilemma, how old is the dog?
Could you gonfor Phoebe instead?

husbandcallsmepickle · 08/04/2024 20:52

Yes. You're literally naming your DD after your dog.

Nah, if the dog is named Penny and DC is mostly known as Nell from day 1 or occasionally by her full name then it shouldn’t cause confusion . If toddler Penelope demands to be known as Penny so she can be the same as her dog- well that’s her choice 🤣 ( and quite cute!)

Nicetobenice67 · 08/04/2024 23:05

Do not like that name at all ….nooooo

husbandcallsmepickle · 08/04/2024 20:52

Yes. You're literally naming your DD after your dog.

She literally isn’t.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/04/2024 23:03

Absolutely loathe Nell or Nellie as a name though. A former colleague has a Nellie and all I can think of is elephants.

theduchessofspork · 08/04/2024 23:03

I like Penelope but not Penny (sorry dog) so nn Nell sounds good to me.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/04/2024 23:02

I like it, but I have a cat named Penelope. (I didn't choose it) and she gets shortened to Pen or Penny.

35andThriving · 08/04/2024 22:54

It's not something I would do personally.
