Hello,

I’ve never personally met a Roman. Is it popular in your location? My husband and I like it a lot but not sure about the popularity.

thanks everyone x

There's a Roman in my son's class. London.

One of my Ukrainian guests was called Roman, he is 7 now. I think it is a popular name there and thus getting more widely know here. I like the name, but then he is a lovely boy which influences me .

I used to go out with a Roman back in the late 70's/early 80's. (when I was late teens).
It was an unusual name then; now I know of several in the school I work in and a friend of mine called her 2nd child Roman , last year.

Character’s name in one of my all time favourite movies…Roman Castevet in ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ 😈
Directed by…Roman Polanski.
I have always liked the name though!

hoarahloux · 03/04/2024 18:05

I know two preschoolers called Roman.

Phoenixfire1988 · 03/04/2024 18:04

There's a few in my area and it's a name I had picked for my son 8 years ago

BronwenTheBrave · 03/04/2024 17:53

Roman Polanski… Rapist and pedophile? Otherwise a great name.

My driving instructor was called Roman. I learnt to drive in 1995.

I know a driving instructor called Roman too.

My DC is 2, we're in the North. 3 Roman's in his room at nursery

AuntMarch · 03/04/2024 16:12

I know a 2 year old and a six year old. Both through work though - from preschool so I've known a lot of children!

Favouritefruits · 03/04/2024 15:37

It’s a naughty boys name, there’s two in my son’s class and they’re the disruptive two! It’s really put me off the name

In the South West. There are 3 Roman’s at DS’ nursery (along with 3 Arthur’s and 3 Leo’s).

Along with Jude, it seems to be everywhere at the moment.

It's funny how it differs by area! I have a Jude but don't know any others (well I know of a couple but they don't love locally) yet going by Mumsnet the name seems so common! I only know one Roman, and Rowan too.

SiobhanSharpe · 03/04/2024 15:33

I always thought itwas a Polish name. (Roman Polanski...)

Ankylo · 03/04/2024 15:31

I know of one. He's around 6.
I'm not a fan of the name but I don't think it's awful either.

Hoppinggreen · 03/04/2024 15:30

I dont dislike it per se but unfortunately it has negative connotations as I have known 2 and neither was very pleasant for differing reasons. Both were very arrogant though so I associate it mostly with that

Really popular here. I like it but prefer Rowan. Ended up having a girl so couldn't use neither anyway 😂

I know a female Rowan

I don’t know any Romans, I live in the west of Ireland though.

mitogoshi · 03/04/2024 12:27

The only one I know is French

JoB1977 · 03/04/2024 12:26

I teach a 14 year old Roman - he’s the only one in the school though. There’s also a Romeo.
Ronan is more popular….

TheCatsHaveLostTheirMittens · 03/04/2024 12:21

We live in the Home Counties, from my children’s acquaintances and friends I know of several boys called Rowan (and the odd girl too) as well as a lad called Romain (French origin of the name). I only know a couple of Romans - both are adults

DangerousAlchemy · 03/04/2024 11:37

My DS has a friend called Roman - he's 16. Apart from that I've never heard of any other kids/adults round here by that name.

Isthisthisreallife · 03/04/2024 11:28

Roman’s I know of seem to be on the ‘chav’ side of life. So IMO it’s a chavvy name. I think Rowan is a lovely alternative and isn’t too common where I’m from

JRM17 · 03/04/2024 11:25

My mum's next door neighbours middle child is called Roman. Then there is Roman Kemp on Radio 1. So I'd say its likely more popular than u think.
