I named my son Oscar, but I regretted shortly after learning the people's opinions of this name online as some people associate it with Oscar Mayer Wieners, Oscar the Grouch, the fish breed and the award, I am in UK and my son is 4 months old now, will my son be teased at school on any of this associations? I am very worried about this, if I change his name before he turns 1, does he need to declare his original name in future? Any problems for him to use the amended birth certificate? I am so depressed. Do you think do a name change is the best solution? If So, any name you could recommend? I am afraid I would make another mistake, please help:

Hi @ByLovingRoseSloth I’ve had name regret for all but about a month of my baby’s life, but the fact is, they now have children of their own and they’ve actually always liked their name.

Its a good name, the regret is just personal to me and the important thing is that they don’t have any problem with it.

I agree, I can't be selfish to choose a name which only I like, there are many things to consider, our purpose is to make our children happy.

I love the name Oscar - I would use it myself if I didn't already have a close relative with the name.

Go back to all the reasons you first loved the name. I have seen some ... questionable ... name choices out there and Oscar most definitely isn't one! It's a lovely name for a lovely boy 😊

It's worth considering the PND for sure. When I had the name regret, people insisted it would be that. I felt sure it was, but that the name regret had caused the PND, rather than the other way around. I went to the Dr and went on medication before I changed his name, so that I could see how I felt then. I still wanted to change his name (we waited 6 months before officially changing it as obviously i wouldn't feel better overnight anyway!). Once we changed the name all my PND disappeared and I was able to come off medication. This was nearly 2 year ago now so I'm not speaking prematurely! The difference is though I had loved and wanted to use his new name for many years. Your situation sounds very different. You don't sound like there is a name you wish you'd used instead. It does sound like PND may he helping you overthink it though.

I only like old fashioned names, I am worried that if I find another name I like but it is outdated or my son will not love it, or that name have some negative associations which I don't know, or many people don't like it, so I am afraid I will make another mistake, I wished that I have another name which I am confident to change to, all boy names have more or less negative comments, I think all mums will feel heartbreaking to know those negative comments, but it is the best name they think they can give to their sons. People are crucial when typing comments online.

I loved Sesame Street as a child, but I am knocking 50 - but a lot of people in the UK of my age didn’t watch it and my kids wouldn’t have heard of it at all. And I wouldn’t associate the name Oscar with “the Grouch”, as it’s a pretty popular name for boys. Nothing to worry about at all with Oscar - honestly.

Oscar is an entirely normal name and no kid in his school will be bullying him because of any of the references you mentioned.

Thank you, I believe you.

@ByLovingRoseSloth , get off Reddit.

You could tease a kid about many names if you chose to (e.g. Isabel necessary on a bicycle, Duncan Biscuit). As a parent, you can teach your child to not react badly to any teasing.

When a name is very popular, a bully won't dare tease about the name because there will be lots of Oscars or siblings of Oscar who will gang up against him or her.

Edited

Thanks, this made me feel better. I am worried about something which might not happen.

Oscar has to be one of the most innocuous names possible!

Your thoughts are disordered and your anxiety is misplaced.

Please see your GP as it's quite alarming dow you to have those very strange thoughts and ideas about your sons perfectly normal name.

Thank you, I will talk to my health visitors.

I just can's figure out why this name has so many associations while it is still popular? If people make joke about this name e.g. the grouch, in the meantime, so many people are still using it? I am not sure who should I listen.

The point is, as these 4 pages have told you, most of us have never even hear of 3 out of the 4 things you are associating the name with. I have heard of the acting awards, but not the other things. But even the people who have heard of one of them have said they don't think of them when they hear that a person is called Oscar.

You really aren't thinking rationally.

Thank you, I take your words.

Oscar is a nice name and is very popular, I do not think it is a name he will get teased about at all!

I agree with all the PP’s about PND. Please go to your GP and talk to them 🤍 I appreciate you said you’re not someone who gets depressed - that was also what I said and I suffered terribly with it (in silence for a long time I might add which definitely didn't help). It can affect anyone!

I think I should take your opinions into consideration as many people have said that, I might have PND.

I think it's in the top 10 baby boy names in the UK. It's the James or Alexander of his generation. Utterly bog standard, couple in every class boys name. Sounds like PND to me as its irrational worrying. It's not like you've named him Vladimir or Osama is it?

Thanks, this made me feel more relieved.

I have an Oscar, it's the best name!

He is Oz, Ozzy, Ozzy-pops

He lives his name too!

Thank you, I think my son will also love this name.

@ByLovingRoseSloth , you don't seem to want to change the name, and you say both you and your DH love it.

Accept that you can change the name, and deal with it.

There is nothing at all wrong with the name and most in the UK won't know about the associations you have mentioned.

You have been like this since a few weeks after your son was born. Speak to a medical person. It sounds like PND.

I was thinking to change it because I learnt those associations, I was looking for other names for a long time, but I like this name a lot, this made me gone back and forth, now I think I made a right decision.

I think it's a lovely strong name, think of the Oscar academy awards & the golden Oscar statue standing tall & proud, there's a positive image for you and his future friends will likely shorten it to Ozzie/Ozzy/Oz which are all really cute too

Thank you, I shouldn't always think about the downside.

You’ve been in a bad mood for 3 months aka you’ve got PND.

I think PND should be a type of depression without any reason, but my depression is caused by name, all I need to find out is that if it is really need to be worried about or not or if I need to take action to solve the problem or not. I think you all have answered my questions. I feel much better now. I don't think I need any treatment to make me feel better.
