I like the names Owen and Quinn (thoughts?) but neither of Scottish origin so am also looking for any suggestions for a gender neutral / masculine leaning name from closer to home

OP posts:

I love the Scottish name Sandy, short for Alexander, I think.

OneWiseDuck · 25/03/2024 22:15

For boys I love the name Sorley, comes from Somhairle. Also Callen/Cailean, Innes and Seoras.

For girls it’s Maggie, Marsaili, Ailis, Flora and Erin (that one isn’t Scottish!).

None of those are gender neutral I know 🤣

I’m Scottish and was at school with both sexes of Rowans. Never met a female Robin though.

I know two female Robyns. Does it count if it’s spelt differently?

Atholl

We used to have a wannabe local politician called Atholl, standing in all the elections (nowhere near Scotland).

All the people who found him annoying always tended to pronounce his name slightly differently...

I remember the billy Connolly tale of , Farquhar, McKenzie, Fraser, with him exclaiming ... doesn't anyone here have first fucking names.😂

Hiddendoor · 25/03/2024 20:21

Rowan was always a male name, but is being used more often for females now. I do love Rowan for a boy.

Sandy?
Macbeth? Lady Macbeth?

theduchessofspork · 25/03/2024 20:17

Arran or Rowan are the only two gender neutral ones I can think of. Unless you want a surname name like Cameron or Blair - but they only really get used for girls in the US

I guess Robin is traditionally short for Robert so it’s Scottish-ish and certainly gender neutral

Alex too if you just used it as a full name

Innes? It’s a Scottish boys name but is very similar to the Spanish girls name Ines

I think people might be missing the point and you want gender neutral or masculine?

AnneKipankitoo · 25/03/2024 19:14

I know someone that named her daughter Mackenzie.
