Hi all,

I’m pregnant with my second daughter, due in a few weeks weeks and we’ve decided to name her Sunday. I’d love some nickname ideas that aren’t “Sunny”.

Middle name will be Victoria just as an FYI.

Thanks all!

Despite the responses to this post, I am sure lots of children have day names after the success of the Wednesday Addams series. At least Sunday is easy to spell 😅.

Someone will spell it Sundae.

FedUpMumof10YO · 18/03/2024 05:32

I do actually like it.

Would you consider it as a middle name instead?

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 18/03/2024 05:13

Hey OP, if you do decide to continue to read, I'm sorry you felt the need to log off from your own thread. Mumsnet can be a wonderfully supportive place sometimes, but it is also full of try-hard wanna be mean girls, and just deeply unpleasant people (as evidenced here). Ignore them, they thrive on drama and attention.

Fwiw, I think Sunday is a beautiful name. I know one, and know of another. The former is a friend of my eldest child. She is 21 and just goes by Sunday. Lovely young woman, her name really suits her. The latter is in my youngest child's primary school - year 4, so 8 or 9yo. She goes by DayDay by friends and some of the teachers. None of the kids bat an eyelid at her name. Why would they - the school also has a little girl called Diamond, two boys called Cosmo, a boy called Bear and a twin girls name Chilli and Scout, all of which I would argue are more unusual than Sunday.

Congratulations on your baby OP.

If April, May and June are names, why such distaste for Sunday?

FYI, both my DC were born on a Sunday but my mum was born in January and her name is June.

Cobra71 · 18/03/2024 04:54

For nickname ideas that complement the name Sunday Victoria, you might consider options like 'Sunda,' 'Sunni.

You should realise that these are the types of comments your daughter is going to hear her whole life. If they're upsetting for you, imagine what it's going to be like for her.

Names like Tuesday, June, August, Quinn, Autumn, Summer etc are all derived from names of seasons/dates/numbers etc.
I don't see that as a reason for them attracting any more bullying than names derived from places- Haylee, Clifton, Skye.. or from Bible stories -Noah, Jonah, Mary .. or from colours - Bianca, Scarlett, Indigo .. or plants - Rose, Aster, Daisy.. or Greek myths etc.
All names come from some where, historically.

SuperstarDeejay · 18/03/2024 03:47

I'm just here to Grin at Puddleboot as a shortening of Sunday.

donteatthedaisies0 · 18/03/2024 03:36

School children will repeat anything associated with a name , they will repeat everything that has been said here . Kids are not stupid .

Why does she NEED a nn?

Because she has a day of the week as her name.

Yes, but judging from the silly comments, posters seem unaware of that fact. Nicole Kidman named her daughter Sunday Rose.

Celebrities have called their children Apple, Moon Unit, Kal-el, Bronx...

user1492757084 · 18/03/2024 03:25

I would use Sunday. It's beautiful.

Reed
Heidi ..both after Sunday Reed, artist near Heidelberg.
Brunch
Faith
Ginger - a nick name connected to her looks
Sissy - a nick name connected to her place in the family
Foxxy - a nick name derived from her surname.
Puddleboot- a nick name derived from a circumstance.

MariaVT65 · 18/03/2024 03:10

Op i’m sorry, i think genuinely think she has the risk of being bullied at school with that name. I genuinely don’t think the ‘roast’ suggestions are unrealistic in terms of the nicknames she’d be given.

nokidshere · 18/03/2024 02:51

A cute baby called Sunday is one thing, but a 35 year old woman called Sunday is ridiculous.

I have a close friend called Sunday. It's never shortened, it doesn't sound ridiculous, she is now well over 35, and she is a highly respected professional who has reached the top of her profession. Her name hasn't held her back one bit, nor do fully grown adults make fun of it, shorten it, or feel it's ridiculous. It's just her name. And no one else's business.

"An actor decided to name her child this name" is not really the killer argument in favor of a name that you think it is.

Fraaahnces · 18/03/2024 02:08

I think nicknames evolve and in our family they rarely bear any relation to the actual name. My eldest was always a little old lady, so her nickname is “Madge” I also call her “Dolly” because she has always had blonde ringlets and gigantic blue eyes. (Was an old lady magnet when she was little!) My twins’ nicknames evolved differently… Girl twin started as “Floppy Socks” because she was just over 5lbs when born and her feet didn’t even fill half of her little newborn baby socks. They were just flapping in the breeze before they inevitably fell off. She was a feisty little thing and her nickname ver quickly turned into “Fox in Socks” or “Foxy Sox”. She still answers to those, plus “Fox” and “Foxy”. Oh, and “Soxy” on the odd occasion. And “Sosie” because her twin brother couldn’t say “Sophie” when he was little. As for himself, he started as “Liam Lambchop”. That quickly turned into “Chopper” and “Chops”. He is also “Yeeum” because “Sosie” couldn’t say Liam.

I know a Tuesday whose nickname is Chewie. (Not at all helped that she is a very tall redhead.) *She is the youngest of seven and the only girl, too.

excessivescreentime · 18/03/2024 01:45

I think Sunday is a really nice name. Name threads often seem to have people slating anything remotely unconventional.

If you're not keen on Sunny, you could think about Ci-ci (playing on the "ess" sound). Or Daisy as PP have suggested. Sunny seems like the most likely nick name though.

I like it but it will be shortened to Sunny.

I don't understand all these posters saying it's a lovely name. Yes it's technically a name but it's a day of the week! And it's more masculine sounding than feminine.

Why bypass literally millions of names to call your baby after a day of the week? Saturday is apparently a name too but people wouldn't use that. I'd be embarrassed to use the name in public.

There's nothing at all wrong with Saturday as a name, as long as you don't mind people inevitable calling you Turd for short...

Domenica, Dominga, Dominique, De Domhnaigh

They're all the same number of syllables or longer, though.

Plus Dominga is great if you grow up in a Spanish-speaking country, but it's highly unfortunate in an English-speaking context.
