Shae for a girl?

I just made a post for Shiloh but my partner has now thrown Shae into the mix. We like gender neutral names but I particularly like Shae for a girl. What are your thoughts? Also would you spell it Shae/Shea/Shay/Shaye?

Reminds me of Shay Mitchell - not a bad association to me at allll! I like it 🙂 I prefer the shay spelling.

shannnxo · 17/04/2024 16:56

What about Shyla

Scirocco · 21/03/2024 21:58

Shae will forever be the Game of Thrones character to me, and that's not a good association in terms of personality, integrity or career choices.

oneinamillieon · 21/03/2024 21:02

i'd honestly just go with shay

KayEmAy · 21/03/2024 19:53

I love it! And honestly from the states I thought Shay was exclusively a girl name until I was older and learned it was neutral. Though I've still only known female Shay/Shaes

Ruthietuthie · 11/03/2024 02:50

Incredibly ugly. Reminds me of a man called Shane I knew whose breath always smelt of poo.

I really dislike the name however it is spelt.

Why gender neutral name idea?

I appreciate all the comments and opinions but have come to realise if it’s not Arabella, Charlotte or Chloe then it’s most likely not getting the best response 😂

I don’t like those either. But Shay is usually a nickname/short form of Séamus, and a fairly ‘old man’ one at that. Or Ché as in Guevara. DS has a Shay and a Ché on his football team, which makes the coach roaring across the pitch during games extra-fun.

timoteigirl · 10/03/2024 11:22

Never come across spelling Shae, only Shea.

Xylophonics · 05/03/2024 11:41

Shaevah
Shaevine
Shaeleigh
Shaedeigh

KirstenBlest · 03/03/2024 19:03

Sheherezade for example which is utterly daft too. I think it's lovely.

salamithumbs · 02/03/2024 18:12

Hmm I'm Irish so I've met a lot of male Shays but no girls...I can't imagine it on a girl but that's probably just my experience. I do like Shay for a boy! I'd go with Shiloh for a girl and Shay for a boy personally, not the other way round.

ILoveSalmonSpread · 02/03/2024 16:49

It's a bit lazy for a name.
When you hear it it's just a short sound, like hay or Vie .

You and your daughter will often get asked what Shay is short for. Sheherezade for example which is utterly daft too.

I feel sure that you could both find something a little more imaginative and endearing than Shay.

oakleaffy · 02/03/2024 14:45

Grain Shilo Nuclear Shiloh-l

Deadringer · 02/03/2024 14:41

Lots of people have said Shay/Shae is a name, and they know people called it, so why the faux confusion from pp?

Viviennemary · 02/03/2024 14:33

Is it even a name. Another daft name. Just why?

defi · 02/03/2024 14:31

Of course it is. There is a great deal of rudeness and snobbishness on mumsnet.

Plus racism and xenophobia. They hate anything different from middle class white English.

Gooseysgirl · 02/03/2024 14:20

I think it's lovely! Rio and Kate Ferdinand's baby girl has the same name, can't remember how they spell it though.

KirstenBlest · 02/03/2024 14:02

OK. My name sometimes is assumed to be a man's (it shouldn't as it's definitely not a male name or an Alex or Chris sort of name) and I don't find it helpful.

everythinglooksbetterpaintedblack · 02/03/2024 14:01

@KirstenBlest well somebody needs to come and tell the children's parents in the school I work in.

boysmuminherts · 02/03/2024 12:45

In my mind they're both horrid names sorry. I might just be in a different culture though.

everythinglooksbetterpaintedblack · 02/03/2024 08:51

Op there are plenty of unisex names that are better than that ...
Avery
Alex
Briar
Charlie
Drew
Ellis
Elliott
Frankie
Jules
Kit
Noah/ Noa
Quinn
Remi
Robyn/Robin
Stevie

Many of those aren't unisex.

TheOriginalEmu · 02/03/2024 12:41

buzzlightyearsaway · 02/03/2024 10:24

It's just a sound. Not a name

So May and Ray and Fay and Gay are names but Shea is a ‘sound’?

TheOriginalEmu · 02/03/2024 12:40

OldBeyondMyYears · 02/03/2024 08:23

OP it's really nothing to do with 'not being Arabella..' etc.

Your child, your choice of name...of course...but you specifically asked for opinions, and that's what you got 🤷‍♀️

My opinion is that it's not a very nice name for a child...but it doesn't matter what I think, if you love it, crack on!

Of course it is. There is a great deal of rudeness and snobbishness on mumsnet.
