Irish baby boy names

I am looking for a less common Irish boys name. I already have a Pádraig, well know but not very popular, 20/30 per year going by the CSO

In the family we already have Peadar, Fionn, Tadhg, Cathal, Cillian, Seán, Odhran.

If baby is a girl she'll be called Fionnuala.

Also we are Irish living in Ireland. I loved Ruairí the last time but I was worried he would be called Rory a lot.

How is Laserfhiona pronounced? Presumably not Laser- Fiona?

Spelt Lasairfhíona
I would say Lassareena.
Means "wine-flame".

Every Naoise I know is male, over 40, and spells it like that.

Nóise would be the spelling I grew up with and only ever knew 2 who used the old spelling of it, like yourselves anyone else I know with the name spells it Naoise, be it male or female

@Mumoffionnuala I'm dyslexic as well, thank Christ for spelling when typing (I also google a lot of words that I can't figure out), can't help my sentence structure fully though! I must have checked and double checked I spelt DS's name correctly I even got DH to call his friend who lives in a Gaeltacht

But that is the correct spelling isn't it? Fionnuala?

It thankfully does not matter but I spelt my dogs name wrong. It was quite a while until that was pointed out to me. I really do no want to do that to my child!!

Yes - Fionnuala is right.

A gorgeous name imo.

Have we mentioned Tiernan?

I think some one did, I like it. DH really dislikes some one with that name so its veto'd. 😂Funny how names have such strong associations I have some of my own and regardless of how much I might like a name I wouldnt be able to do it

I've only ever known it spelled Naoise. I know a few middle aged men with that name and they all spell it that way.

We have a Cathal, Oisín, Rían and new baby Art.
We have a few more that we love and would love to use.
Noíse (though some people have started to use this as a girls name and spelled it Naoise!!)
Deaglán
Fionn
Absolutely adore Síofra and Méabh for a girl.

Only one pp has suggested it so far but I love Ferdia. Such a cool name and most people will be able to guess the pronunciation even if it's a new name to them.

That was another one on my list for DS. I love it.

pontipinemum · 01/03/2024 14:56

@HemlockSoup I asked DH at lunch he doesn't like it. He does like Fiachra though so we might have 1 contender.

@pontipinemum My 3rd son is called Declan, and my 4th son is Christy. I have 2 older, but their first names are not so much Irish. Ex is Irish from the South

HemlockSoup · 01/03/2024 14:27

pontipinemum · 01/03/2024 14:04

It is a cool name but it sort of sounds Portuguese to me but I don't know why!

I won't be going for any of the very unusual old Irish names. I can't speak Irish so I don't think I could say them or spell them correctly ever!

probably cos of Ferdinand Magellan! Grin

MaraScottie · 01/03/2024 14:08

I'd pronounce Somhairle kind of like sore-l-yah

I know a Lasairfhíona but I always have to double check the spelling before writing her name. I'd find having an Irish name that's unusual even to most Irish people to be a bit of a pain. Just my opinion.

LizardOfOz · 01/03/2024 10:54

How is Somhairle pronounced?

Sow ear la?

(Sow like seeds?)

OwlDoll · 01/03/2024 10:45

I work in a school and these are few of the names we have there,
Dualta
Tuán
Cian
Cathal
Diarmuid
Naoise
Conall
Mánus
Pádraig
Connla

How is Laserfhiona pronounced? Presumably not Laser- Fiona?

Lossir-ee-unna (schwas always hard to indicate without IPA).

It's a lovely name.

I'd forgotten Somhairle, @StSwithinsDay -- is it having a Gaelscoil vogue?

I seem to have encountered a lot of little Doireanns recently. I was assuming it was prompted by Doireann 'Ghost in the Throat' Ní Gnríofa, but I gather there's also a TV/radio presenter.

There' a pretty well known modern trad singer from Connemara called Lasairfhíona.

Do you mean that comment for me?
Yes, I know, I've heard of her.
