We're due in 3 weeks and cannot decide on a name.
Which do you prefer, or would you suggest something else?

Just to say that my friend just gave birth and called her son Otto and now I’m seeing it spring up on name forums. I can see it becoming the next Arlo or Ezra. If that doesn’t bother you then Otto is lovely

Thanks for this.
I think you're right in that it has the potential to become the next Arlo, It's definitely becoming more popular!
There has been a sharp rise in the last few years so will be interesting to see what the 2022 data says...if it ever gets released!
I have yet to come across an Otto, but I do think it'd put me off if there were loads around

I’m unsure how cassian is said, I always thought it was cass-ee-an but recently met one who said it as Cashan.

I prefer Cassius though.

Otto is ok, just think of the bus driver from the simpsons though. Otis is better.

Rafe is ok as a shortening, rafferty or Raphael would be better.

I would pronounce 'Cass-ee-un.' The 'Cash' pronunciation seems American to me

I do like Cassius a lot but I automatically think of Cassius Clay, I can't get past that connection.

We have a Casper and we love it. Not common and always always well remarked on when people hear it

Scottyme · 25/02/2024 18:42

Not a fan of any of them personally but it's your child and my DD has a marmite name that her dad chose that I didnt like at first but it's perfect for her now. So go with your gut and forget what others think xx

Denimdenimdenim · 25/02/2024 17:48

Otto is good.

As is Otis and Ringo.

theduchessofspork · 25/02/2024 17:40

Rufus is also nice

theduchessofspork · 25/02/2024 17:40

I love Cassian

Like Rafe

Don’t like Otto - I think it’s the shades of Nazi.. (irrational I know)

Bluegetaniums · 25/02/2024 12:30

I'm afraid I can't see any names or any poll Confused

But I like

Cassius
Quentin
Raphael

TeaAndCake456 · 25/02/2024 09:21

@Curlywurlybar I love that, unfortunately our surname is a very common first name and DH thought people might constantly mix up his first/last names. So it was sadly off the list.

@FlatWhite2 I do love Felix and Hugo but we can't use. Names are so difficult aren't they. Maybe once they arrive we'll just know?!

I do love the suggestion of Rafael and will take this back for discussion. The Polish Rafal has already been vetoed though (DH has some Polish links, it wasn't a random name)
Thanks all for your feedback

I really don't think they are 'silly' names. I wouldn't consider them all that unusual, but thanks for your suggestions

They aren’t silly names, I actually like them all but Rafa got my vote. I think Rafa is lovely too.. you could always use Rafael/Raphael and shorten it if you wanted to give them a more adult name for the future.. I’m due at the same time as you with a little boy and finding names so hard. A few I thought of (cause we seem to have similar taste) are Felix, Theo, Hugo, Luca and Jac.. good luck x

I’m guessing you are older? I haven’t heard of anyone naming their child Daniel since the 1980s.

Those names aren’t silly or ‘abnormal’, I am in preschool baby stage and know a few of each. They are just current. And not middle class…if anything Otto is influencer, trendy territory.

I'm 31.......🤣🤣🤣. Daniel was the 54th most popular name for a boy last year. Check it out. That makes it more popular than either Otto, Rafe, or Cassian. 🤣🤣🤣

"If anything Otto is influencer, trendy territory"

Say no more......

However OP..... My favourite of your picks is Rafe. Ignore all the posters saying that "they hear rape". That is just peak Mumsnet man hating madness".

None of the above...... Don't be one of those parents that saddle their child with a silly name. If it reeks of being middle class it's a no no. They are the ones that will bare the brunt of it when they go to school. Go for something normal. Jack, Dylan, Daniel, Max etc etc.....

I know a Rafe and I have never thought 'rape'.

I have never come across Cassian but I quite like it. Also like short form Cass. I know of a Cassidy which I like too.

Not sure about Otto.

Onelife2024 · 25/02/2024 05:50

I really like Rafe if short for Rafferty / Ralph / Raphael, as it gives more options for when he’s older. Raffy is a gorgeous nn for these names too.

Otto is nice, but it has got so popular so quickly that there is a risk it might date badly.

Cassian is less to my taste as it sounds a bit fussy to me, but I’m sure it would grow on me if I met a boy with the name.

MissedItByThisMuch · 25/02/2024 05:17

I quite like all of them - no help at all! I don’t see/hear rape when I see Rafe but you could use Raphael nn Rafe, or Ralph pronounced Rafe if that’s an issue for you.

It would be a boring (and confusing!) world if every boy was called Jack or Oliver!

Curlywurlybar · 25/02/2024 03:48

Hi op… I have a LO called sully (Sullivan) everyone persuaded me against but he is almost 2 now and we love his name. So go with your gut!

Like Top Boy

mathanxiety · 25/02/2024 03:48

Is there a list?
Or a poll?

I can't see it on the app.

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 25/02/2024 03:42

What about Rafferty?

MaloneMeadow · 25/02/2024 02:04

Love Rafe! Otto is nice too but seems quite trendy and will probably date

Have you considered Rafi instead? Might help with the rape autocorrect issue.. Rafa is a lovely option as well

These aren’t silly names, they’re just unusual.

There was a poster last week considering naming her little boy Ziggy.. that is a silly name.

DiscoBeat · 24/02/2024 23:17

Rafe is great, absolutely do not hear rape.

Same here, it's a lovely name. Sad to jump to rape.
