Birdie?

Is ‘birdie’ okay for a girl? I’m not too sure on the name extended e.g. birdette but I love it for a baby girl!

My mother thinks it’s a cruel name and that it could subject her to bullying?

Please help!!!!

I really don't like it.

Aquamarine1029 · 21/02/2024 17:47

I'm not crazy about Birdie, but I do like Dovey. I watched a documentary about a remarkable woman named Dovey Roundtree and I've had affection for the name ever since.

Well I'm with you @Babytalkx because I think it's lovely.

I've just watched series 1 of Kin, in which the 50 something aunt of the Dublin gangster family is called Birdie. In her case it seems to be a nickname for Bridget.

I'm with your Mum here. It's not a great name to have on your birth certificate and live with until old age. Far better choices out there.

Imagine shouting it across a crowded supermarket.

Floralnomad · 21/02/2024 17:37

I’m with your mother .

Birdie would be nice as she grows up if she is a sweet little fluttery slip of a girl but if she's likely to be a bit of a lump then yes it's very cruel as she'll be called Big Bird.

Bridie as already suggested is much nicer.

BadgeronaMoped · 21/02/2024 17:32

It's a bit out there. I like it as a nickname, like in Mad Men (Elizabeth as a PP has pointed out), gives you lots of options, Elizabeth does.

GoodVibesHere · 21/02/2024 17:31

Oh please, you can't call a child Birdie.

Onelife2024 · 21/02/2024 17:31

Sorry op, I wouldn’t like to be called birdie personally, so that would rule it out for me. Could it be a nn for something like Bridget? That would give your daughter options as she got older?

Roundaboot · 21/02/2024 17:31

It's a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine, along with Queenie but I'm not sure that I could ever use either on an actual child! As an adult woman, would you want your name to be Birdie?
Could you use a proper name with nn Birdie? A Google tells me that it's a nickname for Elizabeth apparently.

clickyourredshoestogether3times · 21/02/2024 17:30

Hideous

MKWarrier · 21/02/2024 17:30

Cute for a family nickname but not for a proper name in my opinion. Could you call her something like Wren and then Birdie could be an affectionate nickname?

Spaghettieis · 21/02/2024 17:30

It’s pretty terrible. Bridie is nicer.

Birdette sounds like a children’s puppet. Isn’t Birdie a nickname for Elizabeth? Can’t you just use it as a nickname?
