Torn between 3 names for son

Newdad87 · 21/02/2024 10:49

Hi,

my wife and I have been going round in circles with our future son's name. We are pretty set on one of Cassius, Titus and Ferdinand, but as the due date approaches we seem no closer to deciding. Any thoughts on any of these? Or dare I ask any other names in a similar vein (only caveat is they have to work in german and english). For context we have a Maximilian and an Ottilie already.

Thanks so much

Victim blaming is a large problem in today’s society. I would steer clear personally.

The rest of us are on a thread about baby boy names. What planet are you on?

I really love Cassius, though my favourite similar name is Caspian! Love the others too though. Nice to see a poll that isn't bland names where the vote will always be completely even across each.

It’s very brave to use Titus, younger kids often get the giggles every time Titania’s name comes up in AMND so I assume Titus might have the same problem ( even though its pronounced Ty - tus, kids will be kids)

Tough call between Cassius and Ferdinand - I voted Ferdinand as it seems rarer and has more choice of nn but Cassius is gorgeous too ( also love the sound of Corin and Lysander if you’d consider more Shakespearean choices 😀)

We like Cass and Ferdi - Titus probably wouldn't get shortened

Except by arsehole kids in school.

Mumofgirls2017 · 21/02/2024 17:39

Cassius by a mile, it’s lovely and goes best with your others.

ParanoidGynodroid · 21/02/2024 14:25

Ferdinand is nice.
Cassius is OK

Titus... no way!

Sleepnplay · 21/02/2024 14:21

I like Cassius the best, although really prefer Cassian. I know one and it does get shortened to Cass, but I've never thought of it as 'girly'.

Caszekey · 21/02/2024 14:10

As the mother of a boy Cas I vote Cassius. We have Castiel instead but I voted strongly for Cassius instead

toastofthetown · 21/02/2024 14:08

I voted Cassius, but I much prefer Cassian or Casimir in the Cas- family.

clipclop5 · 21/02/2024 13:44

Titus definitely does not work in English!!

commonground · 21/02/2024 13:25

Cassius is the nicest I think.

Too much choice will probs be more confusing for you, but it can be helpful to see what others suggest as it might make your original ideas more determined.

So, as we have similar taste (and heritage), I would also add Magnus, Ludo and Claus.

I would steer clear of Ferdinand is it had negative connotations which links your baby to Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand, who is arguably responsible for starting WW1. I adore the name Cassius as it rolls off the tongue smoothly

Responsible by being assasinated?

HuntingoftheSnark · 21/02/2024 13:07

I love Ferdinand because I think of The Tempest (and I have a Miranda).

Onelife2024 · 21/02/2024 13:04

Other ideas

Conrad
Albert (Albie)
Leonard
Gilbert
Johan
Stefan
Haydn

How do you pronounce Cassius? Is it CASH-us or CASS-e-us? It looks so nice written down.

Catsdogsfish · 21/02/2024 12:57

Frederic

Onelife2024 · 21/02/2024 12:56

None are to my personal taste, but I voted for Ferdinand as it has the most scope for short versions (Ferd, Ferdy, Fred, Nando, Andy, etc).

Titus sounds like tight ar** And there is too much risk of kids calling him tit!

Cassius is ok but I’m not keen on Cass as I associate it as short for Cassandra / Cassia etc for girls.

sawnotseen · 21/02/2024 12:25

Cassius. I love that name, and Cass too. I would have chosen it if I'd had a second son.

Pemba · 21/02/2024 12:04

I like that your names are unusual. I would say that Ferdinand is the best bet, with the obvious shortening of Ferdy/Ferdi.

I like Cassius, but I think it's possible for it to become Cass/Cassy which is quite girly.

Titus would be an interesting choice (Gormenghast fan here!), but again might be shortened by some into 'Tit/Titty', even though it's pronounced with an 'eye' sound, not a short 'i'. And even if that doesn't happen, it sounds like 'tight' (mean), which again could lead to teasing.

Kaamos · 21/02/2024 11:49

I like Cassius

BoleynMemories13 · 21/02/2024 11:47

None are to my own personal taste but I do think Cassius goes well with the sibset.

MythicBish · 21/02/2024 11:13

Cassius 100%

although I do prefer Caspian if you hadn’t considered it.

oldnorsesaga · 21/02/2024 11:12

How about Caspian, Frederick or Emil?

SoupDragon · 21/02/2024 11:08

I love Ferdinand best out of the three.

Titus will become a Tit in secondary if peers are being mean.
