What do you think? Is it Ouch cool, or bridge-player with her specs 'round her neck.

I'm just wondering, cos I have little to think about, whether or not the new bbc programme make it chavy? Or, would the people who take their inspiration from tv not touch a name like Nancy. I think it's quite cool; in a Lois/Margot kind of way.

I am a Brit living in the US.

I told my mum that if my DC was a boy, we'd call him Trevor. We were just teasing but she was rather

I know a couple of little Brians and Gavins. And Kevin too. One of DS's good friends is Betty.

CocoDeBearisCocoDeBear · 22/03/2008 14:46

I think there's a Nancy in 'Silas Marner'. I remember my GCSE English teacher, mid-monologue, bellowing Nancy? What a sappy name? Who'd call their child Nancy? Then he looked round and clocked my mortified classmate, Nancy, and shut up sharpish.

Having said that I like it.

Prefer Pansy. Like Violet even better though .

dizzychixies · 22/03/2008 14:44

oh, gone right off it now - red light running pillock that he is

CocoDeBearisCocoDeBear · 22/03/2008 14:42

David Cameron's daughter is called Nancy.

MadameCh0let · 22/03/2008 14:34

I've seen names like Brian, Trevor, Malcolm and Gavin being discussed seriously for babies on the US boards.

Are you American living in UK? I want to got to America call my dd "Jemima" out loud. Just to cause a scene.

Oh, actually I think it was something like No Class.

VictorianPASqualor · 22/03/2008 14:28

I read a book once where people that weren't as rich were called Nancys, can't remember why, I think it was from N.C's or something, But I can't even remember what the N.c stood for.

So actually that's not important at all, ignore me.

dizzychixies · 22/03/2008 14:25

we're all snobs!

UnderRated · 22/03/2008 14:24

It's funny how names have such stereotypes in the UK. It really isn't much of an issue in the US.

MadameCh0let · 22/03/2008 14:13

Colin is awful. It's just so dull. I am in Ireland and here we have Colms and Calums too. Geeky gadget-loving men who laugh at their own jokes and down load The Lord of the Rings off the internet and watch it over and over are called Colin. Or Owen.

dizzychixies · 22/03/2008 14:02

dd1 has decided for a girl marlee and for a boy charlie lol

UnderRated · 22/03/2008 14:01

And are you not tempted with Colin for a boy?

dizzychixies · 22/03/2008 13:57

underrated I really like sylvia/sylvie for this bump if pink in flavour but dh doesn't [humph]

UnderRated · 22/03/2008 13:54

Nancys here are mid 30s+, I'd say. Lots of 50 somethings. No children with that name, although lots of Colins and Alans. My friend's daughter is Sylvia and it's lovely. I like Margot too.

I think it would be a cool name in the UK.

MadameCh0let · 22/03/2008 13:51

Nansí means label-conscious in Spanish....

That's not a terribly bad thing though. Could be worse.

What age are the American Nancys? ARe they about 60 something?

I love middle-aged chic. I'm SO bored with Victorian names. now. Bring on the Belindas and Loises and Sylvias.

We considered Nansi (Welsh spelling) for DD ... I like it too - it was my Nana's name ...

Gingerbear · 22/03/2008 13:48

Was on my shortlist, but I had DS so never got to use it.
Cool name.
