What nickname would you use for Doris?

I think it's a lovely name, but then I also really like Gladys, Hilda and Winnifred. We all have different taste so as you say it is easily spelt, pronounced and known whatever anyone else's personal opinion of the name is. I would go for Dotty as the pet name.

Please don’t call a baby Doris!

Just about to say the same!

MirandaBlu · 06/02/2024 22:03

FWIW, I know a Dorrie (mid-80s) and a Dori (late 30s) who are both formally Doris. Dorrie was called Dosie (like dough-see, not dozy) as a child but didn't like it and switched to Dorrie as a teen.

Smotheredmother · 06/02/2024 21:46

Dozza....

CorBlimeyGuvna · 06/02/2024 21:46

BinkyBeaufort · 06/02/2024 21:45

If you don't want to call her Doris why call her Doris?

theduchessofspork · 06/02/2024 20:16

I would disown my parents as soon as legally possible if they lumbered me with Doris.

Sorry, ma and pa, but those ties would be cut.

It's awful for anyone under the age of about 75

apricotdreams · 06/02/2024 18:06

My grandma was called Doris Noris! Born in 1902. Was called Dore for short. I think it's due a comeback Smile

jennytheonionslayer · 06/02/2024 18:04

My great Aunt Dorris was known universally as "Dorriebonce"😂

Never did know why!

SueBranchers · 06/02/2024 18:03

just don’t call it doris. call it something normal and not from 1943, like lily

shreknjumps · 06/02/2024 18:01

"I am not deterred by people's opinions. In fact it makes me like it more, as then less people are going to be using it."

Even when it's got misogynistic and homophobic connections? Unfairly to the name, of course, but that can't be helped now. No idea why anyone would do that to their own child. It's one of those times when everyone secretly judges the parents throughout school and then the kid turns 16 and changes it anyway

Tootytoot78 · 06/02/2024 17:59

My Mum had a sister called Doris, her sister's called her Doll or Dot (depending on which sister!) and we knew her as Auntie Dot.
I think it is a lovely name, and my Auntie was a lovely, lovely woman.

Zapss · 06/02/2024 16:39

Karloff.

😂

BingoMarieHeeler · 06/02/2024 17:29

I’d go for Dolly or Dot

ChocolateCinderToffee · 06/02/2024 17:27

Doe

Zapss · 06/02/2024 16:39

Karloff.

yikesanotherbooboo · 06/02/2024 16:29

I like it, it sounds current to me and I totally agree with the points made about pronounciation and spelling. It is a classic name that was very much a 'grandmothers ' name when I was a child along with Edith but which is now fresh sounding.

NicknameForDoris · 06/02/2024 16:27

I am not deterred by people's opinions. In fact it makes me like it more, as then less people are going to be using it. My other daughters name is on this thread too so I think it's in keeping with the theme

I like Doris very cute. no idea why people on here are saying such horrible things about it. Traditional names are very back in. Not sure what a NN would be though.

I’d be delighted to see an influx of hipster Baby Dorises! Yes, it’s right at the cusp of reclamation, with Barbara, Winifred etc.

But let’s hope people go for Winifred as the name on the BC. Someone I know recently named their baby Winnie, it’s just asking for poo jokes at school…

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 06/02/2024 15:38

Doris should be the nickname for a nicer name. Doris is awful imho.

@Enko this is exactly why we like the name

sunflowerpinks · 06/02/2024 15:29

Why are people looking for nicknames when the name is so short and easy to say?

Doris doesn't need shortening. Maybe Dor?
