Dory, dotty, dot, dore,

confusedbythesystem · 08/02/2024 07:02

Or I know a teenage Dora, it's a lovely name, simple and elegant at the same time.

Veronicaisaflower · 08/02/2024 07:02

Dodo, Dee, Dots - Doris is a cute name!

confusedbythesystem · 08/02/2024 07:00

How about using some of the other letters? Ris or Rissy?

faffadoodledo · 08/02/2024 06:53

Although, apologies, it's not the name you have an issue with, it's simply whether it has a nickname.

faffadoodledo · 08/02/2024 06:52

When we were thinking of names for our children we tried doing imaginary BBC reporter sign offs for them..
So try "Doris NicknameforDoris, BBC news, Mogadishu", and see how it might sound coming from the mouth of an adult in 25 years time. It's not a perfect test, but was quite helpful in whittling.

Doris

Jeelypieces20storeys · 07/02/2024 23:44

Try introducing yourself as Doris for a few weeks and see what people call you.

sorry for the offence caused. was hearing about it/itself from my eldest recently and apparently is more respectful (no assuming)? must have been wrong xx

I think you mean they/them, surely?

TheChosenTwo · 07/02/2024 21:57

If you aren’t planning on calling her by her name before she’s even born just choose a name you actually like and want to call her by 🙄
Nicknames sort of evolve naturally.

boomingaround · 07/02/2024 21:54

If you like Dot or Dotty as a nickname call her Dorothy instead. It's much prettier and lends itself better to Dot or Dotty as the nickname than Doris does.

Doris is a pig's name to me. It sounds stout and serious and ugly.

SkaneTos · 07/02/2024 21:54

Doris is a beautiful name!

I have a cousin who has a daughter named Doris (I think the daughter is around 12 years old now), I also have a friend with a daughter named Doris, around age 14. We are Scandinavian.

I think it's a really cute name.

just don’t call it doris. call it something normal and not from 1943, like lily

OP is naming a child, not an ‘it’. Incredibly rude of you

Didi
Dolly
Dori

PoodlesRUs · 07/02/2024 16:57

She'll be one of those people who always squirm when they say their name or introduce themselves with a slightly embarrassed look. You can think it as cute as you want but people have connotations of names and she'll pick up on them. Heck, her cultural and social references will be the same as everyone else so she'll may well even acquire the views herself.

whirlingdevonish · 07/02/2024 16:51

If you like Doris, call her Doris. Wait and see how the nickname pans out. Nicknames are natural and evolve. Don't try to be weird and pre plan it!

sunflowerpinks · 07/02/2024 16:41

True, they're both silly names 🧸 !

Riverlee · 07/02/2024 15:42

Personally I think Dolly is silly and childish. I love Doris as it is!

No worse than Teddy.

Lily is the quintessential name from days of yore. The poster child of old lady names.

It's neither here nor there, but I like Doris. It has a clunky charm and fits in well with names like Lois and Flora. I also like Winifred, Agatha, Hilda, Dymphna, Una, Frida, Greta, Edith, Vera, Nellie, Rita, Barbara, Vita, Winona, Rosemary, and Nora.

Dodie would be a sweet nickname imo.

There are generally reasons though that a name is seldom used. Either because of its negative connotations or because it's simply not a nice name.

Or because, you know, everyone has different tastes?

In 2021 (England and Wales) there were only 13 girls born named Miranda. Is Miranda 'simply not a nice name'? Some of the most popular names around at the moment were very rare 20 years ago. Ivy, Reggie, Willow, Evelyn, Roman, Arlo etc all had under 100 instances of usage in 1996 but thousands now.

My son is Gilbert and there are only 20 or so of them born every year. Whenever we introduce our son we get either get pleasantly surprised reactions, like people suddenly remember the name exists, or exclamations of delight followed with 'Oh, like Gilbert Blythe from Anne of Green Gables!'. Nothing wrong with his name at all, it's a perfectly normal name with a long history of usage. It's simply stayed under the radar for the time being.

HouseofHolbein · 07/02/2024 13:14

Dot. But my aunt was Doris and absolutely loathed it so it's not a name I would ever consider using tbh.

I am not deterred by people's opinions. In fact it makes me like it more, as then less people are going to be using it. My other daughters name is on this thread too so I think it's in keeping with the theme
