THe jolly hockey sticks Cordelia got me thinking......

I knew, growing up, a very posh Annabel, Amelia and Beatrice.

All names that could be used by anybody these days. Imogen is another one that was ouch posh when I was about 12.

So what is posh now? Clemency? Tuppence?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Clovis

I secretly love that name and have just joked that I will call my next child Clovis

simplesusan · 26/05/2009 18:48

Yes Madmuggle Rupert is THE ultimate posh boys name.

Personally cannot see how Joby or Jonty are in anyway posh, knowing the ones I know.
Heard a beautiful name today- Evangeline- which I would consider quite posh.

Podrick · 26/05/2009 18:38

Wod er wick = Roderick

hulabula · 26/05/2009 17:54

You must be joking about Wod er wick..? Never heard it before!

Quentin, on the other hand, doesn't sound posh to me, probably because all the little Quentin's I know are certainly not very posh at all.

Podrick · 26/05/2009 17:08

Quentin
Wod er wick

madmuggle · 25/04/2008 22:14

I love the Shakespearian names, and I also love Persephone (or pretty much any name derived from the Greek and Roman myths)... Jasper is lovely too. However I have to concur with others and say that Rupert is the ultimate posh boy name

lottiejenkins · 25/04/2008 07:44

Lysander is also the hero of one of Jilly Coopers "bonkbusters" called The Man who made Husbands Jealous

AHLH · 24/04/2008 21:38

Lysander is character in "A Midsummer's Night Dream".

cyteen · 24/04/2008 15:35

Ooh, I'm in Leicester! I shall keep an ear out for a little Lysander next time I'm by the clock tower

dh2emmanj · 24/04/2008 14:40

My cousin has 3 kids...... she's not posh (she lives in leicester) .

They are called Dharma, Lysander and Ophelia.... I love the name Lysander.... i think it's from a Shakespeare play

cyteen · 24/04/2008 14:19

I used to quite dislike the name Fiona when I was younger, but it's really grown on me over the years and now I love it! Agree that it seems to have fallen out of favour somewhat (in England at least), which gives it sought-after 'lovely and unusual' status.

fiodyl · 24/04/2008 12:44

I have never met another Fiona you can never get any personalised stuff with it on- always have Freya though and for this reason alone I dont like that name

mylittlepudding · 24/04/2008 07:13

Freya - really? I thought it was getting a bit common(er) if anything but I loved it so Freya she is.

I was at school with a Cassandra - Cassie, mostly - very posh, and ditto Henrietta. Most of them are bearable-ish if shortened and though I wouldn't use Henrietta, it has positive memories because of my friend.

ninedragons · 24/04/2008 06:23

I like both your children's names, fiodyl (and the penny has dropped about your name). I really don't think they're at either end of the spectrum. I particularly like Fiona - it's not used enough these days.

WendyWeber · 23/04/2008 22:50

Oooh, there must be hundreds, ip - get ready to grovel!

LaComtesse · 23/04/2008 22:35

Joanna - not a good name if you learn the piano.

islingtonponce · 23/04/2008 22:35

posh AND bloody awful. (apolologies to ALL those with dcs called flavia and marmaduke out there).

ButterflyMcQueen · 23/04/2008 22:34

the previous occupants of our house had 3 ds one rupert

i still refer to his room as Ruperts room

embarrassing with carpet fitters etc

not my fave name!

LaComtesse · 23/04/2008 22:32

Hector was our cat .

Freya and Christian.

WendyWeber · 23/04/2008 22:28

Sister and brother at my school - Flavia and Marmaduke.

I think those must still be posh

snice · 23/04/2008 22:10

Very posh people I have known:
Giles
Quentin
Rafe
Timothy
Rosanna
Richard
Johnny
Angus (but only if very scottish)
Fiona
Hester
Annabel
Jane

matildax · 23/04/2008 21:53

how about hector or penelope ??
actually my older sisters first name is penelope!!! although she never was called that, my dad insisted on calling her by her middle name, so she was never known as a penelope!!
its a funny name, looks really weird written down!! lol

LessThanImpressed · 23/04/2008 18:06

cyteen - hope it wasn't them!

cyteen · 23/04/2008 17:33

My friend has a Sullivan for a nephew, and her family aren't posh. Lame name though.
