Names that were posh but aren't now...

THe jolly hockey sticks Cordelia got me thinking......

I knew, growing up, a very posh Annabel, Amelia and Beatrice.

All names that could be used by anybody these days. Imogen is another one that was ouch posh when I was about 12.

So what is posh now? Clemency? Tuppence?

I guess Rod sounds quite normal. As in Rod Stewart.

deste · 30/12/2012 22:17

My DB who is 63 is a Roderick, or Rod.

bananaramma · 29/12/2012 22:17

Since this thread was started, a lot of names considered posh have become mainstream - Clemency, Jemima, Sebastian, Quentin for example. Although Araminta and Roderick still sound posh to my ears.

mayanna234 · 29/12/2012 22:04

I don't actually thank any names are posh. A person may be posh or chav (in the UK, at least Grin), but a name is just a collection of letters. It is up the the owner of any name to make of it what he wants!

Most names that are considered 'posh' by some are simply elegant, classic, beautiful names in my opinion Smile.

Love the name Lucian (pronounced Loo-sian, not Looshan!)

delilah88 · 29/12/2012 21:59

Is Lucian a posh name?

mayanna234 · 29/12/2012 21:23

Lots of names on here that we thought of as 'posh' are no longer so imo. I know quite a few 'normal' state school Sebastians, Quentins, Hugos, Florences, Violets and Floras!

Agree about Freakonimics - names may start off 'posh' but tend to move down the ranks as people look for new names and these eventually become mainstream.

bitbot · 28/12/2012 22:42

Araminta...only met a few but all been posh Wink

CruCru · 28/12/2012 22:27

This is a very old thread McNaught. Louis is okay but not posh - I know two. Don't know whether there are any French posters who have a view?

NcNaught · 28/12/2012 19:17

yes! with the cut out bunty and bunty wardrobe with tabs on the back - fabulous

imahappycamper · 31/05/2010 21:26

Bunty was the name of a comic when I was a girl!

Cortina · 31/05/2010 16:56

I know a Vivienne who is known as Bunty. Maybe Bunty is a dim of Vivienne?

dannas · 31/05/2010 12:26

15 years ago Harvey was seen as very posh.

Also Imogen, Amelia, Georgia, Tabitha, Oscar, Theodore, Toby & Louis.

imahappycamper · 31/05/2010 12:05

Just noticed someone put Bernard!!! Def. not posh in my experience.

PosyPetrovaPauline · 30/05/2010 20:05

wow i am on this thread under four mumsnet nicknames!

Ellokitty · 30/05/2010 19:59

I can't believe that we have got to 8 pages on this thread and no-one has yet mentioned freakonomics. It used to be mentioned all the time on here .

But a lot of the names I see on here, I would put down as middle class rather than posh. Names like Beatrice, Annabel, Isabella and so on I see a plenty in state schools, so would deem them more middle class than really 'posh'.

In fact, the few people I've known who were truly upper class, actually have quite normal names (like Georgina).

imahappycamper · 30/05/2010 15:47

Oops, school. Must check for typos.

imahappycamper · 30/05/2010 15:46

I was at schppl with a very unposh Roderick.

Has anyone mentioned Clarissa?
That always seemed quite posh to me until my DS was in the same class as one who definitely wasn't.

Elgoogreven · 30/05/2010 15:22

Old thread!

Read my own post and thought, gosh me too!

pranma · 30/05/2010 15:08

Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge-one of my favourite ever books.sadly the film Mystery of moonacre is total rubbish,I always thought Loveday was a beautiful name.

annasophia · 30/05/2010 14:58

Why this obsession with labelling names?

And why is someone resurrecting all these old threads ..?
