@itsallabitofamystery thank you very much.

I know a Victoria and the same thing, name is shortened constantly. I’m glad you mentioned it because that is my problem at the minute why I’m stuck. I absolutely don’t like it shortened. Nothing against anyone that has there name like that. So this is why I’m back and forth on that name.
However with Rose yes I do really like it.

thank you

I love Lucia Victoria. Super name.

itsallabitofamystery · 08/02/2024 19:18

Youngest daughter was going to be a Rose but my grandma said it's a gypsy-traveller name and that I shouldn't use it. My Gran was very old and stuck in her ways/views so I wished I'd have used it now as a first name rather than second, as it's very overly-used as a middle name now. Rose as a first name I think is elegant and classic.

I'm a Victoria so if you want that name then you also have to like the shortened versions. I'm a Vicky, or Vic depending on who I'm talking to. And my mum HATES it. Says it's common. I've questioned her many times whilst she had a child in the 80s and gave her a name that when shortened she absolutely hated!!!

@HoHoHoliday @FlatWhite2 @KirstenBlest

Thank you very much really appreciate it. Made me feel better just incase that should happen where I change my mind.

@FlatWhite2 i definitely do feel that over the last couple of days I would like Rose as the first name. However I thought just incase I change my mind. I do hear it so many times as a middle name rarely first name.

I wouldn’t double barrel it but I probably would have a middle name just unsure what I would have after Rose.

thank you again.

I have been known by my second name since I was early 20s. I switched because I preferred it to the first name my parents had given me. It's been no problem at all. Most place (e.g. doctors) you register your details and they will have a section on the form for "known as" so you would give the full name and then known as Rose.

FlatWhite2 · 08/02/2024 17:48

Going by a middle name is totally normal imo. My brother has always gone by his middle name and it’s basically just a first name to us.. but it sounds like you love the name Rose more than the other suggestions so if I were you I would just go for it as the first name. Rose is a really gorgeous name, the only negatives you hear are generally said when people use it to double barrel totally unrelated names eg Ellie-Rose.. and it’s a bit overdone but Rose alone is simple and beautiful. If that’s what you like you should go for it. I always imagine how I’d feel if a close friend used a name before I got the chance.. would you be more upset losing the name Rose or the others? That should decide for you.

KirstenBlest · 08/02/2024 17:45

Being known by your middle name is a PITA. I know lots of people who go by their middle name, and some have switched to using the first name.
Some actively dislike the unused name but some use the full name.

It's quite common in Wales and the pattern is often something like DGM/DGF_name DCname Surname.
Something like Thomas Ynyr Evans and Margaret Llinos Hughes finding that they preferred to be Tom or Margaret than have people struggle with their name.

Mama0ftw0 · 08/02/2024 17:36

Not sure about this but if I go ahead with a first name and go with Rose as the middle name, if I change my mind / can’t get used to it then would It be silly to just call her Rose?

I ask as I have just come across a Rose and found out her name is actually Stephanie Rose however throughout life so far been known as Rose.

I understand things like the Drs would call her by first name and still all legal things etc would be still first name. School would register as the birth name however I know they ask what is the child known by.

Anyone know of or even done this before?
hope I don’t sound crazy.

I know I could change BC however I don’t really want to do that ( I asked this on a post before)

Belle! It’s so sweet.

@FlatWhite2 beautiful Sofia is. Thank you for this message.

Rose as a first name is uncommon and lovely. Likewise Lucia Victoria or Victoria Lucia sound great. Scarlett O'Hara's child with Rhett was Eugenia Victoria.

chicke09 · 08/02/2024 17:09

I liked Lucia the best out of those, Belle second. Perhaps Rose as a middle name with Lucia?

MissRheingold · 08/02/2024 17:08

Lucia or Victoria are beautiful names.

FlatWhite2 · 08/02/2024 17:07

Lucia is beautiful! A few suggestions with the same vibes

Sofia (LOVE)
Amelia
Cara

salamithumbs · 07/02/2024 19:33

I love Rose as a first name and don't think it's overused! It is a bit overdone as a middle name but not first. I really like Belle but would use it as a nickname for Isabel personally. Not a fan of Lucia, not sure why, I do like Lucy though. Victoria is a perfectly fine name, not my cup of tea but nothing wrong with it! I don't like Vicky though so that would put me off

Mama0ftw0 · 07/02/2024 12:04

@PickledScrump thank you for sharing and sorry to hear that.

@Mama0ftw0 its my name, after a lifetime of sticky Vicky, victor, vikram, Vicky the virus, V card and various other nicknames and comments, please don’t do it to your daughter. These are comments from kids, adults, friends, coworkers and complete strangers, most made in joking ways but it gets very old.

Nice alternatives to Rose

Mama0ftw0 · 07/02/2024 11:03

Thank you @Mihijita

I did not realise how much Rose is used until I joined here.

Victoria is my first choice (and was on my shortlist). Classic name, and I’m actually surprised it’s not more popular.

Alternatives -
Lucinda
Vanessa
Annabelle, nn Belle

Mihijita · 07/02/2024 11:01

I love Lucia, DD was nearly Victoria but settled on it as her middle name because I don’t like vic or Vicky.
For what it is worth - my name is pronounced 2 ways and most people ask my preference - it’s never been an issue

Marcipex · 07/02/2024 11:00

I really don’t like Belle but your other choices are nice.

My DGD and her friends nearly all have Rose as a middle name and they love having the same name.

Mama0ftw0 · 07/02/2024 10:59

@Yuckyyuckyuckity yes this is what puts me off. I only know one person a lady I used to work with and nobody shortened her name. She would always correct new starters if they shortened her name.
I would like it if I felt it would stay full name but yes always get shortened. Also not sure it fits now. Someone said too old now old money name or something lol.

thank you for messaging, appreciate it.
