Sadie?

We love this name if we have a DD. Well known but certainly not overused. I have been stopped in my tracks as on another thread people are saying they think of bad connotations as it has the words ‘sad’ and ‘die’ in it. Really? There are lots of names that are similar. Think Jodie, Elodie etc.

It got me thinking about other names that might also be seen badly by some, Thea sounds like fear. Violet - violent. Claudia - the name means lame. Richard - rich / hard if you break it down into two words but it’s not really something I would ever think to do. They’re all nice enough names that I wouldn’t think twice about it if I heard, including Sadie, but am I in the minority?

I don’t know if other people thinking that means it’s a poor choice, and would hate to lumber negative meanings onto a child. Does it really matter if you like a name?

Sadie was very popular 100 years ago (my parents generation). Several of my elderly patients were Sadies. Always a nn for Sarah. I think it is a lovely name.

Q2C4 · 04/02/2024 01:48

I've always liked the name since I read the Stephen King book 11/22/63. One of the main characters is called Sadie.

serin · 03/02/2024 22:37

I like it, at least it's different to all the Olivia's and Alice's.

salamithumbs · 03/02/2024 22:20

It doesn't make me think of Sad or Die at all but some people are very visual about how names look. My mum used to mix up the names of two of my friends, Nicole and Leonie, because they were 'such similar names' 🤷‍♂️. To me they are nothing alike but she thinks of names in terms of their letters and obviously they have letters in common...

PickledScrump · 03/02/2024 18:46

I wouldn’t think of those connections but I don’t find it a nice name.

Zadie is an alternative that might take away the sad/sadist links

How is Sadist pronounced in English - Sad-ist or Say-dist?

Say-dist. Like Say-dee.

ohididntrealise · 03/02/2024 17:16

I don't like it, but the sad and die connotations are too much of a stretch. I wouldn't take that into consideration.

It is a nickname for Sarah though, which I love.

sunflowerpinks · 03/02/2024 16:33

How is Sadist pronounced in English - Sad-ist or Say-dist?

MrsBobtonTrent · 03/02/2024 16:25

I don't think sad or die. But I do think sadist. Sorry.

DanceForAMomentOrTwo · 03/02/2024 16:16

I would never have thought about ‘sad’ or ‘die’ because its pronounced differently. I like the name and only know one who is in her 30s now. I do know a few dogs called Sadie but I don’t see that as a negative either!

Use it OP, there are names I would advise against but Sadie really isn’t one of them!

sunflowerpinks · 03/02/2024 16:05

I don't like it at all - all I see is Sad, so I pronounce it as Sad-ie in my head.

Bluevelvetsofa · 03/02/2024 14:40

I think it’s timeless, elegant and classy. There won’t be several in the class, she’ll be able to learn to spell it easily and she won’t have it shortened ( much)

Babla · 03/02/2024 14:02

Sadie is lovely.. the sad/die thing never occurred to me until I saw it on here!

Mangotango39 · 03/02/2024 13:41

Lovely name. Not in a million years would I make connection with sad or die. That must be people realllllly overthinking it?

ginasevern · 03/02/2024 13:32

People seeing sad or die have got too much time on their hands.

miniaturepixieonacid · 03/02/2024 13:32

I love Sadie.

theduchessofspork · 03/02/2024 13:15

I like it better as a nn but it’s fine - those people just don’t like the name because it has those associations to them - it’s not universal

littlelizzard · 03/02/2024 12:32

I think it's a lovely name

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 03/02/2024 12:30

I love the name Sadie. It oozes cool.

Nothing like sad or die.

BonjourCrisette · 03/02/2024 12:28

I really like Sadie and definitely would not associate it with 'sad' or 'die'. It's completely different pronunciation.

Blessedbethefruitz · 03/02/2024 12:24

I think it's lovely. A 'normal' name that wouldn't stick out as ridiculous for an adult, cute for a child, and not overused.

purplemunkey · 03/02/2024 12:22

I think it’s lovely. Wouldn’t get to ‘sad’ ‘die’ - I think people are reaching for reasons to poo poo it there.

ilostmyhearttoastarshiptrouper · 03/02/2024 12:13

Sadie is a nn for Sarah if that helps OP

Onelife2024 · 03/02/2024 11:59

It’s a lovely name - love the sound of it, it suits all ages, familiar without being overused, not dated to any particular decade, not too long / frilly, doesn’t need shortening - not many names have all of those qualities.

I completely agree that if you overthink many names they can sound like other words / be broken down into other words etc… (including both my name and my dd’s name) but in real life that’s never been an issue for either of us. If everyone worried about that we’d all be called the same 10 names and that would be very boring and confusing!

ShinyPrettyThings87 · 03/02/2024 11:58

I saw a Baby On Board sign yesterday with the name Sadie on, i just had a passing thought of 'that's not a usual baby name'.

It was a totally neutral thought, definitely never seen 'sad' or 'die' in it. If you love it, go for it. People love to dissect names that they don't personally love.
