Long name for Cuddy

We're expecting our second baby and I am really keen on Cuddy as a name, which is usually a nickname for Cuthbert. We live in Northumberland so it has connection to St Cuthbert. But my husband isn't keen on Cuthbert, but only likes Cuddy if it's a nickname for something else. Any suggestions for what the birth name could be if we shorten to Cuddy?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Cuthwyn
Cuddington
Cuddlebunny
Cuddlemonster

Please don’t use it . It means horse/ donkey in some parts of Scotland and it’s also used by rappers to mean snogging or even sex.

meemawww · 25/01/2024 10:43

Cuddles? 😂😂
I'm sorry but Cuddy is awful

ActDottie · 25/01/2024 10:42

No don’t do it to your child!

steppemum · 25/01/2024 10:41

I am a bit baffled by the responses on this.
Everyone going No! horrible name!

It is not a common nn, but it doesn't seem to have an alternative unpleasant meaning and it really is not that different to a dozen similar names many of which are really popular like:
Eddy
Cody
Teddy
Andy
Dougie

and so on.

I don't think Cuthbert is a great name, it sounds a bit Little Lord Fautnleroy, but it is not an obvious long name for Cuddy.
Pretty much any C name would do.
Cameron
Caden
Camden
Caleb
Charles
Callum

and so on.
My favourite would be Cameron /Cuddy which seems for some reaosn to fit

Cuddy??? Why???????

Gcsunnyside23 · 25/01/2024 10:33

Just a note, I'm from N.I and cuddy here is a very common slang word for a girl, as in "tell that cuddy to go home", tell that girl to go home

Wasn't there a (female) character in House (the one with Hugh Laurie) called Cuddy?

As Cuddy is often a nickname for a left-hander, you could always 'think outside the box' (like an old clue on 321!) and name him Dexter, meaning right-handed?! I'm not going to suggest naming him Sinister... !

Alternatively, you could always call him Kurt, known informally as Kuddy/Cuddy.

It was her surname; Lisa cuddy

catscatscurrantscurrants · 25/01/2024 10:29

Caedmon? Also a Yorkshire/NE saintly connection

Cadfael
Kennedy
Kane
Cameron

Cuthbert doesn't even have a D in it. You could just as logically go with anything starting with a C/K and containing a d or other similar sound -

Caden
Cadmus
Caldwell
Chad
Claude/Claudio/Claudius
Cedric
Clifford
Clyde
Conrad
Constantine
Cornelius
Kendall
Kendrick
Kennedy
etc.

Mr Cuddles

If you want him to sound like a children's 'entertainer' that you wouldn't let your children within 100 miles of!

Pokt · 25/01/2024 10:16

Cudrenia

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 25/01/2024 10:16

Cody is a not-uncommon name - and would probably sound quite similar to Cuddy in a Geordie/NE accent.

Cuddy as in ‘chewing the cud’ and the other doctor in House (though it was her surname)?

It’s a slightly baffling choice. I know it mostly as a nickname for people whose surname is Cudmore, so it’s like calling your child Sully or Smithy to me.

Terfosaurus · 25/01/2024 10:09

I've never heard Cuddy before. Why not pick a name you like and then use Cuddy as a nickname at home?
My son is called "Pickle" it's got naff all to do with his actual name.

BeauSignoles · 25/01/2024 10:09

When you say Cuddy aloud it sounds like you have a blocked nose. Don’t do it OP, give him a name he can choose a nickname from later.

PuppySnores · 25/01/2024 10:08

Conrad?

OhNoCleo · 25/01/2024 10:08

What about a name starting with cu and a middle name starting with d? Nick name Cuddy.

Cullan Daniel?
Curtis Dean?
