Long name for Cuddy

We're expecting our second baby and I am really keen on Cuddy as a name, which is usually a nickname for Cuthbert. We live in Northumberland so it has connection to St Cuthbert. But my husband isn't keen on Cuthbert, but only likes Cuddy if it's a nickname for something else. Any suggestions for what the birth name could be if we shorten to Cuddy?

I am a bit baffled by the responses on this.
Everyone going No! horrible name!

It is not a common nn, but it doesn't seem to have an alternative unpleasant meaning and it really is not that different to a dozen similar names many of which are really popular like:
Eddy
Cody
Teddy
Andy
Dougie

and so on.

I don't think Cuthbert is a great name, it sounds a bit Little Lord Fautnleroy, but it is not an obvious long name for Cuddy.
Pretty much any C name would do.
Cameron
Caden
Camden
Caleb
Charles
Callum

and so on.
My favourite would be Cameron /Cuddy which seems for some reaosn to fit

None of those listed names would immediately make someone think of "chewing the cud" though.

Cody would be far nicer. The child might not spend his whole life in the NE.

What about Spuddy instead?

Or Spuggy?

John -> Jack -> Jack Sparrow -> Sparrow -> Spuggy -> Spuddy -> Cuddy

Call him John

Cuddy is a horse. Cundy is a drain.

Daisies12 · 25/01/2024 14:39

Sorry but that is an awful name. Please do your future child, who will be an adult, a favour and think of something else.

Snugglemonkey · 25/01/2024 14:35

Cuddy is not a name to me. It is a wee girl in Ireland, as in "a wee cuddy".

In Scotland it is a horse or donkey.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 25/01/2024 14:09

Personally I think it sounds like a name a child would call their teddy but could possibly use Conrad
Cody?

Inertia · 25/01/2024 13:56

We called chewing gum Chuddy when I was growing up- maybe Chuddy, nn Cuddy?

aintnospringchicken · 25/01/2024 13:24

Please no. Cuddy is another name for a horse

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 25/01/2024 13:24

I didn't know about the regional use of cuddy to refer to a donkey.

That could make life difficult for him, so therefore, it's a neigh from me.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 25/01/2024 13:23

I can't believe I didn't think of MacGillycuddy!

That brings back lovely memories of Terry Wogan's breakfast show, with the inimitable Dr Wallington P. De Wynter Courtney Claibourne Magillicuddy Walters at his side.

In real life, Pauly just had one middle name - the slightly less revolutionary Christopher!

The name immediately makes me think of American rap artists. Was this intentional or accident?

in terms of a longer name, I think if you want to go with it, why not just name the child Cuddy? Does there have to be a longer version?

tara66 · 25/01/2024 13:13

Sorry - hate Cuddy - what a burden.

ismu · 25/01/2024 13:05

Cuddies are donkeys but also wee tiny fish that are useless for eating so they get thrown back in!!!

BatteryPowerGnat · 25/01/2024 13:04

MacGillycuddy Reeks is a range of mountains in Ireland.

ChaCha5678 · 25/01/2024 13:01

I don't think this is a serious post but just in case.... congratulations on your pregnancy and for the love of God please don't name your child Cuddy! The school bullies will have a field day forever, Cuddy in the nuddy he's a muddy fuddy duddy. Please don't do it to him oh and don't name him Cuthbert either because that's a name for a 90 year old Tory not a baby! Insane in the brain 🤪

Alex Drake · 25/01/2024 12:58

Gies a cuddy back.

As said by many a Scottish child to their pal. (Meaning piggy back)

Cody is a not-uncommon name - and would probably sound quite similar to Cuddy in a Geordie/NE accent.

My dog is called Cody 😂

ErrolTheDragon · 25/01/2024 12:42

Constable Cuddy was the first dwarf member of the Discworld Night Watch, until his untimely demise at the hands of a serial killer.

Cullen is the best (or least bad) option mentioned.

It only makes me think of Cullen Skink. Which is very nice as fishy soups go but for a persons name, not so much!
