Long name for Cuddy

We're expecting our second baby and I am really keen on Cuddy as a name, which is usually a nickname for Cuthbert. We live in Northumberland so it has connection to St Cuthbert. But my husband isn't keen on Cuthbert, but only likes Cuddy if it's a nickname for something else. Any suggestions for what the birth name could be if we shorten to Cuddy?

I share the love of St Cuthbert but I’m afraid I also think of this chap.

Cuddy isn’t great. Cruddy, Cuddly etc.

Cuddy geordie meaning horse or donkey. Regular use in the song the Blaydon Races.

Go the whole hog and call him Cullen Skink?

Cuddlinton
Cudderific
Cuddstable
Cudnatious

Ooh! I’d forgotten about Cullen Skink. Maybe not then.

Notice the OP hasn't come back.
Hopefully went to a bookshop to buy a baby name book 😂

eggandonion · 25/01/2024 17:17

I like Caedmon.

goingrouge · 25/01/2024 17:01

I just said it out loud and it sounds like I'm saying 'cunty' with a cold.

Go for (almost) any other if the Northumbrian saints (I would stay away from Willibrord and Willehad) but
Aidan
Benedict
Edwin
Egbert (Bert/Bertie)
Oswald
Wilfred are all fairly standard names

Acca
Balin (bit of a Lord of the Rings vibe)
Bede
Caedmon
Cedd
Ceolfrith
Haedde are more 'out there' but at least they don't have the donkey/ chewing/ sex meanings that Cuddy had.

Macgillicuddy of the Reeks is a fabulous Irish clan chief name. But a bit long to name a baby.
I quite like Cuthbert . My late mother knew amonk called Brother Hubert. Hubert known as Hube has a certain cool vibe.
Cully and Sully is a brand of soup in Ireland.

Agree with previous posters, a cuddy is a horse, pony or ass

i hope your surname isn’t Back!

Banrockmystation · 25/01/2024 16:01

Kid Cuddy?

Blueberrymuffin8 · 25/01/2024 16:00

The only thing I think of is a rude word that rhymes with dunty, sorry!!!

Topseyt123 · 25/01/2024 15:52

I don't like Cuddy, sorry. I think it sounds as though you are naming a teddy bear.

I don't mind Cuthbert, but would think of it more as a surname, even though I know it can occasionally be used as a first name.

Ahahaha. Def the pregnancy hormones

Add an L and you’re sorted

EmmaGrundyForPM · 25/01/2024 15:42

Cuddy ducks are called that after St Cuthbert I think?

But I agree it's an odd name for a child

beigerage · 25/01/2024 15:37

Cuddy is Cumberland dialect for donkey - as in 'hasta ivver sin a cuddy lowp a five bar gyatt?'

Cuddy's not a nice name for a human being. Cuth's not quite as bad, but probably inevitably will be... adapted.

I am a bit baffled by the responses on this.
Everyone going No! horrible name!

It is not a common nn, but it doesn't seem to have an alternative unpleasant meaning and it really is not that different to a dozen similar names many of which are really popular like:
Eddy
Cody
Teddy
Andy
Dougie

and so on.

I don't think Cuthbert is a great name, it sounds a bit Little Lord Fautnleroy, but it is not an obvious long name for Cuddy.
Pretty much any C name would do.
Cameron
Caden
Camden
Caleb
Charles
Callum

and so on.
My favourite would be Cameron /Cuddy which seems for some reaosn to fit

It has several alternative meanings.

including also meaning a casual sexual encounter. Plus Donkey and other things.

There is a Scottish surname of "McGillicuddy", but have never heard Cuddy as a first name. It does seem a bit unfair for the child.

It's an Ellis Island version of Cuddihy, an Irish surname.
