What does everyone think of this for a girl?

Just wondering what people’s thoughts are on Myka for a girl? Pronounced as it’s written, My-ka. I am aware it’s also a boys name, when spelled Micah. We found the name from watching Warehouse 13 where the lead female is called Myka. And I used to have a lady I spoke to at work called Maike which is pronounced the same way.

Thanks!

It's daft

ScottsTotss · 21/01/2024 20:09

@Serendipity888 Not sure if you saw my update.. but we did go for Myka, she’s 1 now. And so far we’ve not had any issues really. 8/10 times people get it right. The other times it’s pronounced as mee-ka which doesn’t make me recoil, so it’s all good on the front!

It doesn't matter if we all like it or not, but what I will say is that Myka is one of those names that will require a fair amount of guiding people in how to pronounce it correctly.

Oops, just saw update. Just be prepared for a few double takes if you holiday in Donegal lol

Mica is a mineral component found in defective building blocks used in thousands of houses in the northwest of Ireland, causing them to crack and develop serious structural issues — there’s a huge citizens’ redress scheme under way about it.

To me, it would be like calling your child Asbestos.

Exactly my first thought lol

ScottsTotss · 21/01/2024 19:58

I really wanted the spelling Mykah but DH haaates it and I’m sure people on here will probably agree with him 😒😅 I’m prepared for that 😬

I like it. I support names pronounced as they are spelt - so much easier for teachers/health professionals etc. and get so frustrated when Amelia is pronounced the same as Emilia.

scrivette · 21/01/2024 19:52

I like it, I think it was a good choice.

OzziePopPop · 21/01/2024 19:50

Ah, cross post due to my slow typing. Apologies 🙂

OzziePopPop · 21/01/2024 19:49

How about Malaika, it’s pronounced as its written, Mal - aye- ka

its a South African name my cousin (with South African DH) used. Very pretty I think?

RandomMess · 21/01/2024 19:45

I like it, not convinced on the spelling but it's phonetic which is a big plus.

ScottsTotss · 21/01/2024 19:42

Plot twist. It actually is our daughter’s name! She’s over 1 now. I have recently been a bit unsettled about her name and there are other names I’d have preferred but we couldn’t agree on anything else.

My husband wouldn’t agree on any other spelling because he made the sound argument that it’s the only way to spell it for it to be pronounced correctly. And to be fair, it’s only ever been mispronounced a couple of times. She does really suit her name to be fair. I just felt like I wanted a bit of assurance. People we meet in person are always polite and say it’s a nice name, but you just never know so I wanted to ask strangers. I’m not a bit bothered by the negative comments as I know names aren’t to everyone’s taste and I know it’s not common. But it’s been nice to have others say they like it! I do feel better about it, so thank you to those who have replied 😀

depends if it suits her once she’s out!

i like it, it’s interesting.

All2Well · 21/01/2024 19:30

@coldbrightmorning Mica Paris is MeeSha not My-Ka.

I also prefer Meike, not keen on Myka but I guess there are worse names.

jackstini · 21/01/2024 19:24

I like it
Also like Mareike

mrsdanrose · 21/01/2024 19:21

I think it's fine.

I've heard of Melika before and it's fairly similar.

coldbrightmorning · 21/01/2024 19:19

I like it.

Isn’t there a female singer called Mica Paris?

Anyway, I like it and think you should go for it.

I like Micah for a boy too.

anybloodyname · 21/01/2024 19:18

I like it !

ScottsTotss · 21/01/2024 19:17

@Riverlee we have a family member with that name and I prefer shorter names, but good suggestion nevertheless!

@Yuckyyuckyuckity thanks, I do know someone called Mika though and it’s pronounced mee-ka, like the famous singer with the same name. So that wouldn’t work for us.

Sazzle09 · 21/01/2024 19:15

I like it! There was a girl called Micah in a programme I watched.

ScottsTotss · 21/01/2024 19:15

@SoOutingWhoCares yes there are other spellings which I do also
love. But Meike, Maike, Maika etc wouldn’t work in England as far as it being easily pronounced. I don’t really gel with the “looks made up” comments I often see on here because all names are ‘made up’ aren’t they. And I’m not trying to be arsey with you… Just saying, it’s not something that bothers me. Also, it’s not made up (by me anyway) as I’ve seen it other places. But thanks for your input!

OP posts:
Yuckyyuckyuckity · 21/01/2024 19:13

I don't like the spelling but the name is nice enough. I'd spell it Mika.

SoOutingWhoCares · 21/01/2024 19:10

I quite like Meike which is an established girls name.

But not Myka, which looks made up..

Olika · 21/01/2024 19:06

I actually like it.
