Hi we liked the name owais ( o- way—-ss

but some people said it sounds like “ a waste”

we’re having trouble deciding
we want modern cool Arabic names

not with letter M as I dislike that letter

Please don't pick anything you can't pronounce properly. Seif, for example, is actually really hard for an English speaker to pronounce properly.

It's pronounced K-Ice

Thanks, my brain was saying key-us but Q is such a funny letter

preggegg · 13/01/2024 00:02

Louwai

KatPatPat · 13/01/2024 00:00

Also Tateq and Qusai

Not keen on Oasis tbh but the only people that matter are you and Dh.

Someone suggested Qais, how's that pronounced?

It's pronounced K-Ice

KatPatPat · 12/01/2024 23:59

Always liked Thani
Other suggestions are Rabi, Faisal, Hammad(Hammoudi), Qais, Fadi maybe?

My brother named his son a Spanish name and my dad didn’t speak to him for weeks but now accepts it

my dh is Arabic but our other kids don’t have strictly Arabic names (Jude) but all his suggestions are Arabic

I liked Elio which means sun in Italian but he says it was a greek sun God Helios and that’s forbidden in Islam

Baby is almost 2 weeks old and each name we present they say something
and now they see how indecisive we are they are thinking it’s funny and are suggesting names all the time :/

then we told our other kids a name and they’ve told their friends at school but I no longer want the name as it ends in letter m

Decide on the name between the two of you and then tell everyone. I like Owais. It's a good name. How about Kais (like Kais wa Leila)? I like Waleed too.

Scirocco · 12/01/2024 23:34

Are there any men in Arabic history or literature that you particularly admire? Sometimes that can be a good starting point for name inspiration. I like Owais, and if you like it then use it!

Woristag · 12/01/2024 23:30

Then don't tell them until baby's born

Zok · 12/01/2024 23:27

I have some mental health issues and take weeks to decide on names with my others
I don’t seem to like sound of some letters like M, R,Z

every name we tried to tell our families resulted in them judging the name and thinking we’re asking their permission

JamTartLover · 12/01/2024 23:22

Personally I don't like the name Owais/Awais (sorry!)

Some modern names I've seen are:

Deen ( will probably have spelling issues with the name Dean though)
Rayan
Rehan
Zain
Zaid
Faisal
Nazir
Nadir (this does also mean lowest point in English)
