I live in a Gulf state and have done for decades. Ilyas is a name used here and especially over the last 5 years when it’s become more popular.

in fact there is a book of acceptable names that a child’s name has to be chosen from and Ilyas is in it. There’s hundreds of names on it and when a birth is registered the name is checked against the book even down to the correct spelling and variations on it.

Yes, Ilyas is a Muslim name. I've only ever known Christians called Elias.

We’ve gone with a name ending in m and it’s makinh me uncomfortable as I associate m with people I dislike like sister in laws and husband . However it has a nice meaning.

when I pick a western name (Elio) it always goes as a middle name which I’m fed up of

I have a Christian Lebanese friend called Elias. I have never met a Muslim with the name only Ilyas.

I’ve always loved Elias or Bilal, both names of incredibly kind Arab men I knew when I was much younger.

Mairzydotes · 19/01/2024 10:26

Is Adnan a suitable name. I knew a boy called that and thought it was a lovely name

Zok · 19/01/2024 10:14

Elio means sun in Italian but is linked with Greek god of the sun helios so I’m not sure if it’s forbidden to name that
the Greeks worshipped everything at one point

@Mercurial123 I've met a few, but of mixed Maghrebi/European heritage. It's definitely the Europeanised version.

Issa is great actually! I forgot about Issa. Fab name. I've got a fondness for Yahya as well.

The Eliases I know are British (Christian, white).
I know an Issa too, he jokes he's Jesus.

@Zok I'm pretty sure Jude is an Arabic name, I think it means "plenty". Elias is Arabic (his nn can be Eli) and it's similar to Elio. Family are sometimes very hard to deal with. They can be judgmental and harsh with their words. I think the best thing you can do is pick a name that you like and as my grandmother used to say, leave it in the hands of God. However your family takes the name, at least you know you like it and you did your best.

Isn't it Joud or Jood?
