Due our DS1 in a couple of months and considering this name!

Do you like it?

And how would you pronounce it?

What is the difference in sounding between 'Arry (like Harry with dropped H) and Ah-ree ? We are not from the uK and in past threads people said it's pronounced either 'arry or ' ah-ree but what does it mean? Any words to rhyme that will help me understand the difference?

We expect it to be pronounced like Ah - re .

Is this how you would pronounce it?

Like Ariana Grande - he name is shortened to Are ree

I think Arry like Harry without the H just sounds cockney and will cause confusion if he is actually called Harry...

Bells3032 · 12/01/2024 12:43

Jewish here and seems fairly common within the community. i'd prounance R-Reee (not rhyming with harry)

SleepingStandingUp · 12/01/2024 08:38

I'd assume Ari but if you told me Ahree I'd pronounce it like that. Can't account for the kids and teachers tho or the rest of his life. But that's life. Lots of people have to clarify the pronunciation esp on such a culturally diverse country. Use it if you love it

HardcoreLadyType · 12/01/2024 08:35

If I saw it written, I would pronounce it to rhyme with hurry, but if I heard it said, I would try my best to imitate the correct pronunciation.

Tooearlytothink · 12/01/2024 08:31

My neighbours have a lovely black lab called Ari Blush They pronounce it Are-ee.

mojitoish · 11/01/2024 14:53

With the e on the end it's a commonly found name in Holland where it's often short for Adrianus.

I know one who lives in uk and he does get Arry and occasionally Air-ee but it's pronounced R E.

DuchessOfSausage · 11/01/2024 14:13

I know an Aris and that never crossed my mind but it's a valid point.

Aglets · 11/01/2024 13:43

DuchessOfSausage · 10/01/2024 20:25

More like Ar-ee. I'd think it was short for Aristotle and that there was a greek connection.
Aris (Are-is) is quite nice.

Aris is rhyming slang for Arse.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 11/01/2024 13:41

I know a little boy called Ari. His name is I pronounced Ah-ree. Lovely name. I did initially have to ask how it was pronounced as I wasn't sure if it was Arry ( not nearly as nice and just sounds like a mispronunciation of Harry) or maybe Air-y. I've only come across the name once.

Cas112 · 11/01/2024 13:32

This is my favourite name ever, however this was gonna be the name for a girl if I was having a girl.. pronounced -ahh ree-

Samzzz · 11/01/2024 13:23

Ah-ree. Aria but without the A, definitely not ‘Arry’. It’s a gorgeous name.

TheBirdintheCave · 11/01/2024 12:19

Jennyjojo5 · 10/01/2024 22:33

i know quite a few Jewish Ari’s and they’re short for Ariel

Yeah this is how I know the name. Pronounced 'AH-ree' and short for Ariel 'ah-ree-el'.

peaceinourtime · 11/01/2024 12:15

Ari is a beautiful name. Pronounced ah-re it’s easy to pronounce

Alloveragain3 · 10/01/2024 23:23

R.E.

I really like it but it does strike me as feminine as many girls use it as a nickname e.g. Ariella, Ariana, Araminta

Blacknailer · 10/01/2024 23:00

Love it. I think of it as a Hebrew name but I'm sure it could be from other origins too.

Aparecium · 10/01/2024 22:55

I would say it AH-rih, but then I have a non-English name which ends in a short 'ih'. I don't think native English speakers can hear the difference between the short 'ih' and the long 'ee' which comes naturally to them. They cannot seem to say it. so I am resigned to hearing my name said with a long 'ee' at the end.

CurlewKate · 10/01/2024 22:54

Why do you want to use it?

Jennyjojo5 · 10/01/2024 22:33

i know quite a few Jewish Ari’s and they’re short for Ariel

ThursdayTomorrow · 10/01/2024 22:03

Definitely ‘arry (like Harry with a dropped H).

JessicaPeach · 10/01/2024 21:56

I have an Ariel shortened to Ari and we pronounce it Arry.

NewName24 · 10/01/2024 20:54

But how is Harry pronounced? Is it not Har - ree?

No.
In England, whatever your accent as far as I can think, the 'Ha' in Harry is like the 'hat' in 'hat' not 'har' as in 'hard'

So it is said Ha t ree

herewegoroundtheblueberrybush · 10/01/2024 20:50

I know an Indian Ari.

If you are in the U.K. people will mispronounce it Arry rather than Ah-ree so if you choose it better be ready to deal with that

Tulipvase · 10/01/2024 20:43

Whitewhitewine2 · 10/01/2024 20:36

@Mushroomwithaview

Perfect! The short of answer I was looking for, R.E is how I would pronounce Ari too.

But how is Harry pronounced? Is it not Har - ree?

I’m not very good at these but to me Harry is pronounced Ha-ree

GreatGateauxsby · 10/01/2024 20:43

I hear it like Ari Gold from Entourage the tv show.

Which is Ah-ree

great name - I really like it

janfebmarchapril · 10/01/2024 20:41

I'd say Ah ree. I know a French Henri that's pronounced Ah ree. I wouldn't say Arry
