Which Greek names will be the next big thing?

We don't have any on our list so far, except for Chloe which is quite mainstream, but it seems like they are very trendy now and I just thought about this today and was wondering which one you think will become popular next.

Right now Penelope is really popular as well as Athena. I think Daphne, Apollo, Atlas are all rising quickly. Zoe, Chloe and Phoebe were popular in the past.

Which one of these has a chance and have you noticed any? I'm just so curious:

Antigone - I heard this is rising quickly among posh people, can anyone confirm?

Chione

Persephone - Saw this a few times, too.

Calliope

Nephele

Nike

Atlas

Apollo

Ares - I've seen this a few times too.

Eurydice

Any ideas?

It's just out of curiosity, because I'm intrigued. The only one on our list so far is Chloe, but I'm thinking about adding Phoebe again. I guess we're not brave enough for Persephone, even though I like it.

Not keen on Jason, but how about Iason?

FunkyBu · 17/01/2024 18:51

@Loo3 ah yes, I have seen it also pronounced that way. It's often the case that anglicised pronunciation of names isn't correct.

Elemenope is popular at my kids’ school.

😂

Elemenope is popular at my kids’ school.

VeryQuaintIrene · 17/01/2024 18:44

Jocasta is definitely due a revival.

Loo3 · 17/01/2024 18:39

@HalfBloodPrincess @FunkyBu it's difficult because that seems to be the American way of pronouncing it but it's not my Greek families way of pronouncing it which is more like Kall ee oh pee with a short O not an oooohh.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 15/01/2024 00:53

Calista is pretty. I had a very pretty little Siamese cat that I called Calista. 😹

MañanaramasCat · 09/01/2024 22:19

Clytemnestra is worth reviving.

I came on to suggest this. With a brother Richard maybe? Great nicknames potential 🤣

FunkyBu · 14/01/2024 23:52

@HalfBloodPrincess yes you are absolutely right on the pronunciation. I really like the name- when pronounced correctly!

Oh god that is tragic and so embarrassing for them Grin

Is it pronounced like Cah LYE oh pee? That’s how I’ve always said it in my head, but I know of two, 15 years difference in ages and both known as Callie

(never heard them say the full name out loud, just seen it written down)

HalfBloodPrincess · 14/01/2024 23:43

Hecate is my ‘name I wished I was brave enough to use’ along with Balthazar for a boy. Neither would have suited any of my children though.

Agapornis · 13/01/2024 16:20

Hoping for Hekate, Cassandra, Klytaimnestra, Medea, Eris, Penthesileia Grin

Paris for boys, of course Wink

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 13/01/2024 11:24

In Greek Nike is pronounced Niki (hard K)

FunkyBu · 13/01/2024 09:48

SkaneTos · 09/01/2024 21:19

I know two girls born around 2010 who are called Nike. Neither of them have Greek heritage.

How is it pronounced? Hopefully not like the trainers...!

FunkyBu · 13/01/2024 09:47

CaptainCallisto · 09/01/2024 20:13

There's a Calliope in my son's class, but her parents had clearly only seen it written down. They pronounce it Callie-ope (as in hope). I inwardly wince every time I hear anybody say it!

Oh god that is tragic and so embarrassing for them Grin

TheBirdintheCave · 13/01/2024 08:53

@Dooglydog Just another example of popular media changing etymologies I'm afraid. See Ariel 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️

This is making me smile. My daughter Artemis is nearly 30, and my little Granddaughter is Hera. (My daughter loves her name, always has and was adamant that it was never shortened)

I always thought Artemis was a boys name, purely because of the books Artemis Fowl. Learn something every day 😂

hera is a brilliant name, I also love hero.

i always wanted an interesting name. My name is possibly the most boring one out there. It was the top contender for princess charlotte, middle name included.

HyggeTyggeDotCom · 11/01/2024 16:47

Can’t imagine calling a wee baby Bacchus! I love Gaia though, who said it won’t be coming round for ages?!

in all honesty though, Penelope, Xanthe and calliope would definitely make my list, beautiful names.

peaceinourtime · 11/01/2024 14:47

Maria

orangecreamdream · 11/01/2024 14:18

I know of a Kyri (boy), It's shortened from Kyriacos which I think is quite a popular name in Cyprus but I've not heard of any others here.

thislittlebird · 11/01/2024 13:28

I have Sybil and Daphne on my list, not sure if I’ll use them but I do like them.

Squirma · 10/01/2024 20:43

Pretty sure pippa is slang for BJ in greek/cypriot.

Thea
Athena can also be spelt Athina
Georgia
Andri

urrrgh46 · 10/01/2024 17:16

My Xanthe is 22

urrrgh46 · 10/01/2024 17:15

I'm of Cypriot heritage - my girls are Xanthe, Hebe, Olympia and Ennea

Yes, it’s beautiful. Love saying it.
