Hi everyone, we are looking for some ideas/advice! We don’t know what we are having (due next month) and in the last 2 years I know loads of girls that have been born and less than 5 boys. We have settled on a boys name (after both of my grandfathers) - James/Jamie.
We are really stuck for a girls name as we feel every name we like has been taken. We were settled on one of these and within the last three months a work colleague, neighbour or friend has taken them: Emelia, Emily, Ella. We have a one syllable surname and the second name would be Rose after my mother & grandmother, so would ideally like a two syllable first name. These are the names that are ‘taken’ in the last couple of years: Mia
Fiadh
Ella
Eve/Eva
Rose/Rosa (cousin took Rose in Sept)
Emelia
Ayda
Mara
Erin
Ava
Cara/Kara
Clara
Grace
Katie
Naoise
Evelyn
Layla
Alana
Abi
Millie
Willow
Daisy
Isla
Ciara

Emma

Thanks so much to everyone for taking the time to think of suggestions - really appreciate it!
On reading back I realise I misspelt ‘Emilia’ - thinking Emilia Clarke (GOT reference).
Oh Jamie as a girls names sounds cool…gender neutral names are all the go nowadays! Didn’t think of this!
Also like the idea of Rosa/Rosanne as encompasses Rose.

Its hard because we were really set on a variation of those three but can’t imagine having our baby 2-3 months later with the same name and everyone thinking we’d copied them - plus the neighbour will likely be in the same school with our kid. The work colleague I see most days so that’s a bit of a nightmare too! Could request to move offices haha!!!

Could we get away with calling our girl baby Emie or Evie instead of the full name. That’s probably what they’ll end up going by in the long run. Otherwise I like the idea of Aoife or Eleanor maybe.
Thanks again everyone for all your helpful ideas and opinions!

Jamima looks like a typo
Marykate looks like two names squashed together, my brain would try to read it as a word and it would sound like Marickaty or something

KirstenBlest · 08/01/2024 13:14

Don't call a girl Jamie.

Whataretheodds · 08/01/2024 12:29

Don't give a second thought to what your colleagues have called their daughters unless you are lifelong friends and your families regularly socialise together.

Ditto neighbours.

shoesday · 08/01/2024 12:27

I'd go for Jamie as a girl

I agree, Jamie for a girl is lovely too! I grew up with sisters Jamie and Billie and always liked their names. Their names felt very 'cool' and unique.

Especially compared to my name, of which there were 6 in my class and we all ended up with a nickname with a slightly different spelling to differentiate.

Hi given you seem to have loads of friends and family that have had babies recently, does it matter if there's a bit of duplication? Obviously it's not great to have 6 with the same name, but just a couple is ok isn't it? It's going to happen in school anyway. Just choose a name you like. Classic ones are often best and never go in or out or fashion.

HoHoHoliday · 07/01/2024 21:10

Just pick the name you like the most and use it. It truly doesn't matter if your work colleague, neighbour, anyone else, has used the same name. What is this new silly fuss over having exclusive use of a name? A name cannot be "taken", it's allowed for more than one person to use it! As you go through life you will have different colleagues, different friends, different neighbours, your child will always remain your child. Choose the name you love the most and use it.
FWIW, all of the names you listed are completely fine and nice, except Marykate, as the poor girl will spend her entire life correcting people who assume her name is Mary Kate.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 07/01/2024 21:08

I have a Sofia Rose. Couldn't you just have Rose? My DD often says she would have been happy with Rose although she does like her name

You could still use the same name as a colleague used.

Unless a close friend or relative I would use the same name if I loved it.

I agree with a PP, if you like Jamie use it for a boy or a girl. Jamie Rose is lovely!
I wouldn’t be put off using a name if it was a neighbour or co-worked only a very close friend or family. Go with the one you love xx

NachosAndCheese · 07/01/2024 20:44

Agree with the pp who said that every other girl will have Rose as a middle name (along with Grace and May), it’s become the absolute filler middle name. The equivalent of Louise or Jane.

So give her a not as common first name as every Eva/Poppy/Isla/Ella/Emily/Lily/Mia will have Rose as a middle name. She will just be another ‘something’ Rose. Or use two middle names to break it up.

Jamie Rose sounds pretty good to me. Why not use Jamie as your girl name?
