Is Morgan American sounding/Chavvy on a girl?

I'm aware that Morgan is a Welsh name but I know it was very popular for girls in the US about 25 years ago, would you assume anything if you heard it on a girl?

I prefer more modern names over traditional names and me and dh love Morgan for a girl but our family members seem to think it's odd. It been slightly more popular for boys in the UK so maybe that's why but don't want it to come across as (I hate this word) "chavvy". A lot of the comments about it from our family were that it sounds very "American sounding" for a girl. I'm not sure if I should take that as an insult or notHmm

We like the name so we will probably choose it either way but I know people are very honest on here so I would appreciate your thoughts?

I know a lovely Morgan but she is early 20's so that might tie in with the pp's opinions on it being quite dated now

I’ve always loved it and it was high on my list but I know my husband wasn’t convinced. I settled for naming my laptop Morgan, but it would suit a little girl much better 🙂

I like the French spelling - Morgane. Seems to soften it and sounds lovely.

What do you mean by "chavvy"? My understanding is that this is a slur implying prejudice against the working classes. Is this what you mean?

I only know male Morgans and they’re all called Mogs day to day.

Yes.

Morgan is firmly in the chav / stripper zone. Not quite as ghastly as Madison, but still definitely not smart.

Scottish (and northern English) first born boys were often given the mother's maiden name as a first name, eg, Fletcher Christian.

Oh and I do quite like it for a girl, if I’m being totally honest my personal taste is a bit more flowery but it’s a perfectly decent and usable name!

What’s so bad about American?! Whilst obviously Morgan Wallen had a huge 2023, when I lived there I barely heard these style of names at all so I’m not even sure it’s accurate. DD’s (now 6) daycare class included Brian, Martin, John, Alison, Claire x2, Emma and Jennifer.

Once again we see the use of "American" as a negative.

It's more a reflection of the ignorance of those posting such claptrap than Amrrican culture. Surely British people are aware of the long Scottish tradition of using surnames as names? If not, why not?

@theduchessofspork , Mirren and Merryn aren't that bad but I really don't like Meredith as a girl's name. I can't not hear it as Merrydeath

I like Morven.

Yes, it is a surname and in the UK we do not generally use surnames as forenames. You can if you want of course but there are plenty of really nice names around, so why go American? No offence to Americans, what they do is up to them.

I know a female Morgan who’s lovely.

If you love it, use it. I think it’s really nice. The Morgan I know is always smiling so I have a positive association with the name.

Came to this thread to say the same, I know two Morgan’s and they’re both absolutely lovely women so I only have positive thoughts about it.
