Emily-Rose ? Emilie-Rose?

My husband and I are trying to agree on a name for our daughter. We aren’t agreeing on many of them, but one of his suggestions that I find pretty is Emily-Rose. He’s French so we could
also use Émilie-Rose.

my concern : I googled the name and apparently it’s the name and title
of a horror film, The Exorcism of Emily-Rose. I’d never heard of it! What do you think? Dealbreaker?

Lose the hyphen, in fact, lose the very overused Rose.
Emily Catherine.

ThePoshUns · 11/01/2024 18:19

Both are lovely but ditch the hyphen

FindingMeno · 11/01/2024 18:06

French spelling - it's beautiful!
Never heard of the film.

LeGinge · 11/01/2024 17:56

Amelia Rose, as an alternative?
Not RTFT, apologies if already mentioned.

SuperFurryCat · 11/01/2024 17:54

I was going to call my DD this many years ago until I was telling my friend the name and her nursery age DD misheard me and said ‘why are you going to call your baby ‘smelly rose?’ I love Emily and Rose as names though.

Coffeeismyfriend1 · 11/01/2024 17:44

We narrowed down to Emily or Sophie for DD with an edge towards Emily. DH suggested Rose for her middle name and I said no for the same reason so she has a different middle name 😂

Thelazygardener · 11/01/2024 14:02

I have a cousin called Emilie Rose. I like it but it’s her first and middle name. Definitely wouldn’t hyphenate.

FayCarew · 11/01/2024 13:51

Normally I would agree but Emily has been so popular for so long that she'll get it wrong a lot.

People get my name wrong a lot but they tend to use names I don't like when they do. Something like Fearne, Frey or Finn.

Ladybird1977 · 11/01/2024 13:17

Emily or Emilie are both lovely. One will be more regularly misspelled than the other but for me but for me (as someone with a similar commonly misspelled name), it’s not of huge importance.
Many traditional English names have a number of versions (Annabel/Annabelle for example) and more unusual names are now commonplace. I teach and unusual spellings are common.
If the OP prefers Emilie she should just go for it.

FayCarew · 11/01/2024 12:40

@Ladybird1977 , I can't understand from your post if you agree with the spell it Emily posts or not.

Emily has been very popular for a long time and it's been in the top 20 girl's names for about 25 years. The Emilie spelling is hardly used in the UK, so I'd expect it to be misspelled a lot.

Ladybird1977 · 11/01/2024 12:01

There’s a lot of agreement on the hyphen but the regular comment about the spelling of Emily/ie is a little strange. Unusually spelt names or those from a different culture are very common in the city where I live and teach.
And I have a name which is commonly misspelled/mispronounced. When it’s important, I correct and when it’s not, I don’t.

fancyfrogs · 11/01/2024 10:05

Would make me think of the film straight away

Belles8335 · 11/01/2024 09:46

I have a little girl named ‘Annabelle’ born just after that horror film came out. No one EVER mentions it, connects it, so go with it - it’s a beautiful name. I also like ‘Emmie’ x

Ilovesmesomefriedchicken · 11/01/2024 08:16

That is a very pretty name, I like it with the French spelling & without the hyphen. Another French name I love is Camille, Camille Rose sounds lovely too!

Beachywave · 08/01/2024 19:49

I’d probably for for Emilia rather than Emilie-Rose if you want a more interesting version of the name. Emily/Emilie still nice on its own though.

TiredMummma · 07/01/2024 22:39

I wouldn't but we also rejected Rosemary and Annabelle for similar reasons!

laurajayneinkent · 07/01/2024 21:46

I wouldn't worry too much about the film.
I do think Amelie-Rose is lovely though!

Correlation · 07/01/2024 19:15

Honestly, honestly, it's a bit of a babyish name with either spelling - sorry.

I prefer the name Emma to Emily/Emilie and it is spelled the same in French and English.

ST10 · 07/01/2024 19:07

Lose the Rose element - as much as I like the name Rose I’m just not a fan of double first names, sorry! I like the French spelling if your husband is French

3kidsandaBoxer · 07/01/2024 18:59

Although the French version looks pretty, I also have a variation of Emily as my name and spend my entire life spelling it out for people! Doesn't help my work email address is my full name, people always assume its Emily with a Y as that is how it sounds. I mean its not a massive issue but definitely is a pain sometimes.
I also find it then allows people to misspell it ALL the time - I'm forever getting an extra I or E added in somewhere.

Just a thought for her in the future!

Mostlyboymum42 · 07/01/2024 18:41

My daughter is Amalie Rose..

JessieIsabelle · 07/01/2024 18:38

I thought "exorcism" immediately, even before you mentioned it. Sorry! I still think it's usable, but I personally wouldn't. I also think the hyphen doesn't work unless you always want to call her Emily-Rose all of the time, which doesn't really roll off the tongue when you say it many times per day. It works as a first name-middle name combo, though.

I would only do Émilie-Rose if you pronounce it the French way. They are not pronounced exactly the same. Émilie pronounced Emily would be odd. Émilie is also quite dated by now in France, it's more a name of the parent generation. It's pretty, though.

I would choose something like Emily Rosalia, Emily Rosalind, Emily Rosaline etc. and just call her Emily. Or go for something else that flows nicely with Rose (two syllables maximum) such as Eva-Rose.

Bookkeepermum · 07/01/2024 18:34

I too thought of this film. And I believe it's based on a true story.

Noodles1234 · 07/01/2024 18:11

Emilia Rose?

chalkee44 · 07/01/2024 17:56

My youngest daughter is called Emily-Rose 😜
