Georgia or Cora?

lunarodgers · 03/01/2024 00:27

Narrowed down our girls list to Georgia or Cora - can I have a mumsnet vote please?!

Little sister for Anna.

I'm leaning slightly more towards Cora, DH slightly more towards Georgia.

I don't particularly like George / Georgie as a shortening of Georgia, but do quite like Gigi / Gia. (Appreciate nicknames develop themselves over time, but would like to encourage a preferred one for family early on!)

Middle names will be family names, Liv Elizabeth.

Ooh not heard Gia before as a shortening but I really like it. I think it would work well for either Georgia or Georgina.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 03/01/2024 14:36

Not keen on Cora but I like Georgia. Also like Georgina with Georgie for short

BlastedPimples · 03/01/2024 14:34

Cora.

Georgia is everywhere. It's pretty but boring.

ellenpartridge · 03/01/2024 14:32

Cora

PickledScrump · 03/01/2024 14:29

Cora is such a beautiful name as is Anna. Georgia is the opposite. It was also popular in the 90s/00s so feels really dated now. Gia is nice.

Anna and Georgia go well.

Georgia Liv Elizabeth

Do you like Anna and Eliza?

Julen7 · 03/01/2024 10:33

Much prefer Georgia

Daniagainagainagain · 03/01/2024 10:27

I think Cora is so harsh, I just hate how it sounds. And it reminds me of Cory which is what this household calls a penis.

Georgia all the way.

JaninaDuszejko · 03/01/2024 10:23

Love your name choices, I would have had an Anna if I hadn't had a close relative with that name already and like both Cora and Georgia and think both pair well with Anna. I like Cora slightly more but only by a hair breadth.

CynthiaKnicksOn · 03/01/2024 09:49

Cora, definitely

eatdrinkandbemerry · 03/01/2024 09:46

Cora by a mile

marshmallowfinder · 03/01/2024 09:33

Cora makes me think of corer. Ugly sounding name. Georgia is much nicer.

Outthedoor24 · 03/01/2024 09:30

The only Cora I know is lovely lady in her 60s

I've never ever heard Georgia pronounced with 3 syllables. It's Jor-ja, like the state or country. Georgina is 3 syllables, Jor-je-na. However, if you want to shorten to Gia I'm guessing you may be pronouncing it with 3 syllables to get that sound? I honestly think you'll have a lot of pronunciation issues if you do as every Georgia I have ever met (quite a few in the earlier years of my teaching career) has pronounced it Jor-ja.

I think both sound fine with Anna but neither are as classic. Cora is a vintage name on a comeback, Georgia was quite popular in the 00s and is much less so again now. Depends what you're looking for?

@BoleynMemories13 Definitely 2 syllables where we are.

I love Anna, but haven't come across any other classically traditional names that I like as much. (Typically suggested on here as matching Anna would be Catherine, Elizabeth, Alice, etc).

Not too fussed about a theme or set style / origin of names - they'll be individual. Just as long as they sound nice being called together!

I don’t like Cora personally, also it seems to be everywhere at the moment so may date quickly?
Georgia is lovely.

Icedcinnamonbun · 03/01/2024 09:23

Cora! Really love it but unfortunately wasn't able to use it myself

I loveeee the name Cora. Suggested it to my partner for our girl. He said "no, people will call her pakora toes". He's a fool. The name is beautiful.

This did also cross my mind with regard to family and extended rhyming nicknames!! 😂

@Couchant ,it's the feminine form of George. The state was named after King George II.

lunarodgers · 03/01/2024 09:22

Couchant · 03/01/2024 09:19

Cora. I think placenames are tacky. Also, have you been to Atlanta?

I have not, nor do I have any intention of going to Atlanta! 😂

But Georgia comes from the same origins as George, right? I don't think the name comes from Atlanta.

I'd be pronouncing Georgia with 2 syllables as is the common UK pronunciation - anything else I think would be a recipe for disaster! Was just thinking of potential alternatives to George / Georgie.

Family have a history of coming up with "cutesy" nicknames, mainly involving name lengthening - exactly like Georgie Porgie! So if we didn't encourage something different from the get go I know that's 100% what she'd get.

Georgia is two syllables. It was very popular here in the1990s but suspect it was just very popular in this town.
Cara is nicer than Cora.

Sleepnplay · 03/01/2024 08:55

I much prefer Georgia, don't find it dated or masculine at all! Not keen on Cora.

GoodVibesHere · 03/01/2024 08:51

I'm not fussed on Cora, I think Cara is a bit prettier.
