Any thoughts? The more honest the better! DD will be our first and we’re struggling, the only name that DH and I can agree on is Poppy but I’m not so sure

If I'm honest I've never liked this name or understood its popularity. I realise it's a flower but just going by the word/sound it sounds kind of silly to me.

My name is Poppy and I am in my early fifties. I love my name and have done my whole life. It used to be very unusual. Apart from the occasional golden retriever or ladrador, I never met anyone else with the name. In recent years it has become more common, but I still love it. I have had a couple of different professional careers and the name has never been an issue.

There are loads of lawyers called Poppy if you google, so it passes my sensible test.

One I think is fine on a child but awful on an adult.

DramaAlpaca · 02/01/2024 01:01

I find it very twee and cutesy, neither of which are attributes I like in names.

It's popular though, so clearly lots of people love it.

I like it. Yes, it could be a dog name, but a lot of pretty names are dog names because they are pretty.

Bournetilly · 02/01/2024 00:56

I like it, it’s cute and I do think it’s nice for an adult (I know a few adults with the name Poppy) but it’s very popular so I wouldn’t personally use it. It’s up to you if you like popular names or not.

Cute for a kid, not so much anyone over 14

It’s one of those names like Luna or Bella that when you hear it being called in public there’s a 50:50 chance of turning round to a cute toddler girl or a Labrador.

This is absolutely true and our dog is often mixed up with our daughter ! It has a never bothered me but yes it is definitely equally a doggy name!

It's a yes from me because I have one (15)! I still love the name because it's pretty but also has underlying connotations of strength and resilience. She hates it though, thinks it's childish and prefers her middle name. Perhaps something to think about!
