Any thoughts? The more honest the better! DD will be our first and we’re struggling, the only name that DH and I can agree on is Poppy but I’m not so sure

I like it

NoelJo · 02/01/2024 10:16

I think it’s lovely but I would probably use it as a middle name.

TheaBrandt · 02/01/2024 10:14

Personally don’t think it works on an adult unless you are one of those cutesy women who wears dungarees and is very perky. Same bracket as Honey and Daisy. Hell would freeze over before a Dd of mine had a name like that.

blankittyblank · 02/01/2024 10:14

It's a lovely name. As of this year it's in the top 10 most popular girls names, in case you care about that.

TheBirdintheCave · 02/01/2024 10:12

It's a fine name, it's just massively overdone like Olivia, Sophia, Isabella etc.

NachosAndCheese · 02/01/2024 10:10

Twee, cutesy. Popular bordering on overused.

Always paired with the filler middle names of Rose/May/Grace. Boring.

SlashBeef · 02/01/2024 09:57

I really dislike it but I'm not keen on many flowery names to be honest. Poppy, Lily, Daisy etc are all a bit blah.

theduchessofspork · 02/01/2024 09:51

I think it’s wet TBH - I just wouldn’t want to be called Poppy/Daisy/Lily as an adult - it’s too flower fairy

DesertSnow · 02/01/2024 09:40

I like it. If you're concerned about the cutesie factor, you could always use it as a middle name

hotdiggetydog · 02/01/2024 09:31

Justleaveitblankthen · 02/01/2024 07:16

It's the short version of the Greek name, Calliope which I love.

Never knew that! Loads of people probably call their kid Poppy without knowing it!

hotdiggetydog · 02/01/2024 09:29

Lovely name but It has become a bit "help for heroes" / nationalist in the last few years.

peaceinourtime · 02/01/2024 09:28

Poppy is a beautiful name, I don’t understand the hate towards it.

Lovecat · 02/01/2024 08:48

I work with an adult Poppy, it really suits her, but she's in her early 20s, physically quite small, with a still-girlish voice. I don't know if it would work as well if she were my age and size...

Mind you, I can’t talk, I go by a shortening of my own name which according to MN is abhorrent on anyone over 12, but being called my full name these days makes me feel like I'm in trouble with my mother.

Pemba · 02/01/2024 08:32

I can see that it's the name of a lovely flower and probably sounds very fresh and young. Apart from being a bit juvenile maybe I think it is a name that is fine in the UK but doesn't travel well.

In other countries this pop-ee sound has other meanings and I think people in some European countries find it silly as a girl's name. In the USA I think it would also be unheard of as a girl's name and I have heard Americans using 'Poppy' as an extension of 'Pop', ie the equivalent of Daddy.

Sorry to bring it up, but just a factor to consider.

Houselamp · 02/01/2024 08:30

I think it sounds nice, but we called my Grandfather Poppy or Pops

user1477391263 · 02/01/2024 07:54

Can't stand it, sorry. It's a very, very silly-sounding word.

ParsnipAndPoppy · 02/01/2024 07:42

Will she have a brother called parsnip😉?

oldnorsesaga · 02/01/2024 07:39

I like the sound, but I think of poop and puppies when I see it written down. So, it's not my favorite, but most people might not see poop.

Justleaveitblankthen · 02/01/2024 07:16

It's the short version of the Greek name, Calliope which I love.

PurBal · 02/01/2024 07:11

I know a few little people and a couple of adults called Poppy, no dogs. I think it’s a bit cutsie for an adult and isn’t to my taste but if you like it then I don’t think there will be any raise eyebrows, it’s perfectly fine.

Onelife2024 · 02/01/2024 07:01

I really like Poppy. At the moment it’s hard to imagine an adult called Poppy as I haven’t met any, but that will change when all the little Poppy's grow up!
My dog is called Poppy, and it is commonly used for dogs (we often meet other dogs called Poppy), but I think that’s because it’s a 2 syllable, pretty name.

Twinklesis · 02/01/2024 03:17

I much prefer Violet as suggested upthread.

HedgehogDay · 02/01/2024 02:02

One of my absolute favourite names - so much so, 29 years ago I named my daughter Poppy.

I still love it - and feel like it suits her. My daughter has positive and negative things to say about it - she knows I wouldn't be offended if she wanted to choose an alternative but has stuck with it so far.

Nicknames have ranged from Pops to Poopy - no prizes for guessing which one of those was thought of by her younger brother!!!

For a long time we didn't come across any other Poppys - just one lady, aged about 90, when my Poppy was about 3.

user1492757084 · 02/01/2024 01:25

It's sweet. I have always preferred the name Polly.
Polly and Poppy team well with a serious, more classic, second name ..
Poppy Caroline
Poppy Isabelle
Polly Theresa
Polly Charlotte

CoffeeBeansGalore · 02/01/2024 01:19

Quite sweet.

Have you considered Pippa or Piper?

If it's the floral aspect you like, maybe
Lily
Rose
Violet
Briony
Willow
Jasmine
