Any thoughts? The more honest the better! DD will be our first and we’re struggling, the only name that DH and I can agree on is Poppy but I’m not so sure

I like it.

Moier · 12/01/2024 18:59

If l had had a third daughter Poppy was my choice.. ex H didn't like it..
This was 1990s.
I love it.

lljkk · 12/01/2024 18:56

I can't warm to it, sorry, it's obviously silly.
MNers say scathing things about my own name, btw, so that's just how it goes. You can't please everyone.

Can't abide it. It's the 'pop' sound. Urgh.
I 🤔 think I have issues though. I can't stand the term "Pop of colour" either!

TinkerTinkerbelle · 07/01/2024 23:16

I love Poppy! It’s my top choice if I am ever blessed with a baby girl. So cute. Interestingly when I told my sister she said it was her favourite too but she didn’t use it as it sounded silly with her P surname. I’ve heard that in the USA people often call their Grandad ‘Poppy’ and this is why it’s not a popular girls name in the USA. However, I live in the UK and we don’t have this so it’s a popular girls name here. I know a couple of adult Poppys and think nothing of it - so I find it very strange when people comment that it’s a childish name. It’s just a lovely, pretty name.

I also love the name Darcy and funnily enough this was my favourite girls name for a long time before I fell in love with Poppy. Lovely choice ☺️

I really don't understand the "twee and cutesy" thing. Everything poppies represent is the opposite of twee and cutesy.

It's the sound of Poppy that's twee and infantile. The meaning is lovely

ChanelNo19EDT · 03/01/2024 05:39

I like the meaning, it's the sound

LauderSyme · 03/01/2024 01:52

Cross post with you OP. I agree Darcey is a lovely name and I am impressed it only took you and dh one day plus one hour to reach a mutual decision!

RogueFemale · 03/01/2024 01:50

Another vote for twee and cutesy.

Rosario99 · 03/01/2024 01:48

Darcey is lovely, great choice.

Rosario99 · 03/01/2024 01:47

Too close to puppy and pop pop pop. Not my taste. The only poppy i know comes from a multimillionaire family, her parents can hire her if her name is an obstacle. They could have named her Chair Grapefruit and she'd still be super confident. If you're rich, you can name your child anything.

LauderSyme · 03/01/2024 01:46

A poppy is a lovely flower and I think it's a classic enough female name to suit younger girls and older women, but I agree with the pp who said it is a silly sounding word. For that reason I wouldn't use it.

Goldenretrievermum · 03/01/2024 01:45

Thanks all!! I think we’ve ruled it out, mainly as it keeps autocorrecting to Poopy..

Love the Pippa suggestion but unfortunately I wouldn’t use it due to the rude meaning in other languages. Such a shame as it’s a gorgeous name and I’ve always loved it

DH and I have settled on Darcey!

Yeah I wouldn't choose to use a lawyer called Poppy

@Nofilteritwonthelp What an absurd and ridiculous comment. One of my close childhood friends, Poppy is a paediatric anaesthetist - if your child needed an emergency operation would you refuse her care and wait until an anaesthetist with a name you felt was more professional came? Get a grip.

Cute for a kid, not so much anyone over 14

This. Childish.

You're naming her for adulthood, not babyhood.

TootenCarMoon · 02/01/2024 18:04

Makes think of Poppy Pants, as in if your baby had wind and you’d say in a cutesy voice, “Who’s a little poppy pants?!’

No you wouldn't.....

CalebWomble · 03/01/2024 00:32

I have an adult DD Poppy (from before it got popular - I've loved it since I was about 16) and don't see it as a wet name. Yes it's cute, but so is e.g. Katie, and no one complains about that. I don't understand at all the PP saying Polly is much better - not by any objective standard surely! It certainly suits my daughter - not petite, doesn't have a girlish voice, but has been known to wear dungarees and is pretty fucking perky (that's mainly the ADHD though). And it sounds good with her surname.

If you like it, use it, your dd will make it hers.

I really like it.. know a couple, both teens and works really well.. in 10 years time there will be adult poppys/lily’s/Rosies everywhere.. really don’t get the hate on this post and the usual ‘you’d never get a lawyer called Poppy’ brigade is out… which is utter nonsense

No one is saying there aren't lawyer Poppys

They're just saying they think it's a twee name

I think Daisy is twee too, but there are plenty of Daisy's born in the 70s with power jobs... it's still a drippy name.

abcdefghijkI · 02/01/2024 01:12

If I'm honest I've never liked this name or understood its popularity. I realise it's a flower but just going by the word/sound it sounds kind of silly to me.

I have to agree

pearldiamond · 02/01/2024 23:36

Love it! But I would, because I have one! 🌷

SallyWD · 02/01/2024 22:40

I really like it. People always say it's a cutesy name than doesn't suit a grown woman. I feel that about many names but not Poppy! To me it's not cutesy at all - if anything it's a little edgy. I know two adult Poppys who are both middle aged and bohemian. They both have very good careers and their name hasn't held them back in the slightest.

Eva90 · 02/01/2024 22:23

I love Poppy. I have always said I've loved all floral names such as Poppy, lily, daisy, rose/rosie - all just so gorgeous and timeless.

Sockmate123 · 02/01/2024 22:20

No. Cute for a toddler or puppy. Not an adult. Think of names that suit and adult also, not just a small child x
