Hi all

Having a baby, due April 2023, and gender is a surprise. I love old vintage names. Could you suggest any as I'm really struggling to narrow it down?

Some ideas:
Boys - Hugo, Otto, Caspar, Reuben, Wilfred (Wilf),
Girls - Evelyn, Indie/India, Henrietta (Ettie), Audrey, Aubrey, Elodie, Everly

Aubrey is a man's name.

How old do you want? Matilda, Eleanor, Philippa, Katherine, Mary, Edith, Isabella, Charlotte, Sophia, Caroline, Alexandra, Julia, Adelaide.

Philip, George, Edward, Henry, John, Lionel, William, Richard, Louis, Alexander.

Will the name suit a baby, hormonal teenager and a high court judge. If yes to all three, it's a good name!

Nora
Dorothy
Audrey

Clement
Quentin
Edmund

I would say the names you. Have mentioned are all really popular and definitely not vintage.

Imo, vintage names are:

Mark
Paul
Andrew
Kenneth

Brenda
Eileen
Carol
Susan

Hilda, Brenda, Stella, Jean, Maureen, Marlene, Pauline, Patricia, Glenda, Gloria, Janet, Christine.
David, Peter, Michael, Douglas, Harold, Vincent, Roy, Kevin, Paul.

Now those are vintage names!

Interesting how 'vintage' is interpreted.

Jessieshome · 02/01/2024 15:57

Ariadne (female)

Alfie is very, very common in schools - however, I've never taught an Alfred!

India was used as a woman's name in the 1800s. That's pretty vintage.

I do like Victor.

Sadie
Edmund
Robert

Well it must have been very rare.

NachosAndCheese · 02/01/2024 15:31

Alfie is one of the most popular boys names there is.

MerryChristmasToYou · 02/01/2024 15:29

Alfred and Alfie have been back for ages

Tel12 · 02/01/2024 15:20

Wilfred and Alice if I had to narrow it down. Alfred must be due a comeback.
Both popular in the Victorian period. Hugo and Leo seem a bit too popular now.

MerryChristmasToYou · 02/01/2024 14:48

@LaurieStrode , but that was when India was part of the British Empire.

Not Indie or India, they're not vintage, and not particularly nice.

Eggbeard gets my vote!

Wilfred or Etta. Don't like Henrietta and none of your other names are 'vintage'.

NachosAndCheese · 02/01/2024 14:23

I don’t know if you’re worried about popularity but school is overrun with Evies and Evelyn’s. Especially if you add the filler middle name of Rose/Grace/May on the end. Soooooo overused.

Love India and Henrietta is nice.

Reuben, know bloody loads of them! Wilf is great, Caspar is quite popular now.

I really like the suggestions of Henrietta, Iris, Quentin & Victor.

Some of the suggestions aren't vintage yet imo (Claire, Amanda??)

Of course they are;

The word vintage literally means "of age." With such an open meaning, there are many interpretations. Most antique dealers consider an item to be vintage if it is at least 40 years old. So, in the context of this blog date, a vintage item would be made between 1918 and 1978.

Claire and Amanda were popular when I started school in 1976 so born early 70s...

sunglassesonthetable · 02/01/2024 12:08

Bertie and Alice are lovely .
