Opinions for triplets!

CultraSloan · 29/12/2023 18:59

We are blessed enough to be having triplets due next month - a boy and two girls!

90% sure that DH and I are certain on their names but something in me keeps saying that they’re just not right. I’m Irish and he’s English, living in Northern Ireland but planning a move abroad in the future so we’ve chosen names that represent both our backgrounds yet are still quite mainstream and (hopefully) easy to pronounce. Any opinions good or bad very welcomed!

Conor Alexander
Maeve Isabel
Beatrice Fiadh (pronounced Fia, as in Mia)

Lovely names.
They don't need to go together.

UsingChangeofName · 29/12/2023 23:34

btw Connor with 2 n is the surname

Not where I live, it isn't. In fact, I don't actually think I've come across anyone with Connor as a surname at all (O'Connor, yes, but not Connor on it's own)- not that that is relevant. But in my experience - which the OP is asking for opinions from people all over, particularly with the international move coming up - Connor as a first name is very normally spelled with 2 'n's.
Very happy to be told that in Ireland it is more commonly spelled with one n, but just raising awareness that isn't multinational.

I wouldn't be concerned about the non phonetic (in the English language sense) issue with Fiadh.

There are plenty of Canadians with faux Irish names like Loghan, Brogan, Keaghan, Teaghan, Meghan, Shealagh, Fiadh will fit in fine. People will be curious and charmed.

Don't forget, your children will be in class with children from all sorts of different heritages, with names like Xochitl, Boleslaw, Aadhya, etc.

PeekABoo22 · 29/12/2023 23:00

@CultraSloan I should add my name is also Irish 😂 but regardless, you have chosen really beautiful names so go with your gut. Best of Luck with everything

I really like Beatrice, Alexander and Isabel and they all travel well so I would flip and go with those as first names

Maeve v fashionable in the UK right now, might be a pain for spelling in a lot of places. I don’t like it, makes me think of Mauve

Conor isn’t terribly distinguished

@theduchessofspork I want my kids to have Irish names that reflect their heritage (which I am very proud of). Saying that Conor isn’t terribly distinguished is incredibly rude and only plays in to the stereotype that certain people have of Irish names in general. Here it’s a classic name going back many generations. Off the top of my head I can name childhood friends who are now eminent surgeons and lawyers called Conor, it’s certainly not holding them back.

Thank you all for the other suggestions.. really the only Irish girls names I like are Maeve and Fiadh so a bit boxed in here! Really keen for them all to have a bit of my heritage in their name, only reason I wouldn’t use Fiadh as a first name is I don’t want her to have to be constantly spelling/pronouncing it as even at home in the North I’m certain a lot of people would struggle

Fiadh has rocketed to the top 3 (?) so I think everyone will be able to pronounce it. If that's the only thing holding you back from using fiadh - go for it!

@CultraSloan in response to you not wanting to use Fiadh, how often are you asked to spell your name? I have a name that can be spelt 4 different ways (that I know of, could be more) and I rarely have a situation where I have to spell it out for people.

@PeekABoo22 Genuinely never as it is so common (which pains me!!). Fiadh worries me as it’s not phonetic and even living in Northern Ireland where it’s not super uncommon a huge amount of people would struggle with it and the pronunciation, never mind somewhere across the world. Same with the Maebh spelling of Maeve

Lara would go better than Beatrice with the other names.
Lara Beatrice ..

Or Fiadh Beatrice - people get used to Irish names in North America and you won't find the knee-jerk response to them thst you can sometimes fine here on MN. Canada is a multicultural society.

@coxesorangepippin Thank you! It’s Vancouver we are headed to, all very exciting. Can’t wait to have easy access to ski resorts for the weekends and be able to get the kids on the slopes when they’re old enough!

You're not moving to Québec are you?

Fiadh may have issues!

coxesorangepippin · 29/12/2023 22:14

Congratulations on the triplets, how wonderful

Can attest that living in Canada is great, you'll love it 🍁

@CurlewKate No, I don’t think they have to match and prefer they wouldn’t as at the end of the day they’re individuals but it does worry me that other people will judge that 2 have Irish names and one doesn’t? Or that they’ll grow up and question it? Maybe it’s just pregnancy brain and I’m overthinking!

Honestly I had this exact same dilemma so went with the names all having the same country of origin, but now I realise it really doesn't matter and I should have really just gone with the ones I preferred.

GreatBigYou · 29/12/2023 22:11

Rockrobon · 29/12/2023 20:12

100% use Beatrice if it is a name you’ve always loved. I think it’s a gorgeous name. We have id twins and used names we have both always loved. They are different styles and don’t necessarily ‘go’ but they are individuals so it really doesn’t matter.

This (although mine aren't ID). Go with the names you love.

ChainBastard · 29/12/2023 22:08

Beware if you use Conor you will get a lot of people overruling you and insisting the "correct" spelling is Connor... I am aware it is a perfectly valid alternative but it's not the only correct option!
I think all your names are lovely so I'm not much help. Maeve is especially beautiful!

Mumaway · 29/12/2023 22:06

Huey, Dewey and Louie obvs!!
Congratulations

Prefer Connor with 2 ns
not keen on Maeve trendy at the moment
Beatrice is a classic name as is Charlotte

Connor with 2 ns is the surname version, the proper spelling is Conor
Maeve/Maebh has always been a classic in Ireland, it’s only recently that it’s reached the UK and really shot up in popularity

Three lovely names. I think they go well together

Terrrence · 29/12/2023 21:46

I really like them. I would use them.

CurlewKate · 29/12/2023 21:45

I don't think they have to match, do they? Maybe better if they don't!

How lucky to behaving triplets. Congratulations OP. I like Beatrice, Charlotte and Isabelle/a. I'm not sure Connor as a more modern name goes with the more traditional sounding girls names. I'd go for a more traditional boys name tbh, but I like traditional names for DC.

@caringcarer I think it must be more of a new name in mainland UK as here in NI + Ireland it’s very traditional and links back to the origins of the country
