Opinions for triplets!

CultraSloan · 29/12/2023 18:59

We are blessed enough to be having triplets due next month - a boy and two girls!

90% sure that DH and I are certain on their names but something in me keeps saying that they’re just not right. I’m Irish and he’s English, living in Northern Ireland but planning a move abroad in the future so we’ve chosen names that represent both our backgrounds yet are still quite mainstream and (hopefully) easy to pronounce. Any opinions good or bad very welcomed!

Conor Alexander
Maeve Isabel
Beatrice Fiadh (pronounced Fia, as in Mia)

I like the names you have chosen and I don’t think they need to match
Can you please come back and update us how you get on.
Hope all goes well with the birth.

Many thanks @OfMiceandWomen , I will! X

@Oldermum84 Thank you - that’s my train of thought too. It’s lovely but I really don’t feel it’s right as a first name. If we were planning on living in Ireland it would be alright but in the north and Canada (and wherever else she decides to go in the future!) I feel it would be an issue. DM has an uncommon and hard to spell name, nobody can ever pronounce it and she’s spent her life resenting my grandmother for giving her it! I’d hate to do something like that to one of my own DDs x

I love them. Please don't do Fiadh as a first name - no one will pronounce it correctly and she'll be forever annoyed.

spackleplumb · 30/12/2023 15:54

I have a friend in Canada with a Beatrice! Beautiful name, I like all the names you've picked!

Prefer Connor with 2 ns
not keen on Maeve trendy at the moment
Beatrice is a classic name as is Charlotte

Conor is the correct spelling. Connor is a surname.

How lucky to behaving triplets. Congratulations OP. I like Beatrice, Charlotte and Isabelle/a. I'm not sure Connor as a more modern name goes with the more traditional sounding girls names. I'd go for a more traditional boys name tbh, but I like traditional names for DC.

Conor is a very traditional Irish name.

I love Patrick and I do also love Maeve and Beatrice. She will get Meeyav and some point but I live near London and names get massacred here too in a different way 😂.

Patrick, Maeve and Beatrice get my vote if you aren't worried about pronunciation of Maeve (it wouldn't be a big worry for me either tbh)

Obviously, mumsnet opinions aren't the be all and end all, but I found it massively helpful for naming my babies. I didn't go with what we were told by the hive mind, but it helped me focus in on the names I loved

RoseMarigoldViolet · 30/12/2023 13:59

I don’t think they need to match. The sets of triplets that we know don’t have naturally matching names but they come together as a set as people know them. I think your choices are great and you should go with what you and your husband like. It may not be helpful to have lots of Mumsnet opinions!

MalcolmTuckersDisdainfulSneer · 30/12/2023 13:37

I grew up in NI and think Maeve will become meeyav.

Conor isn't as nice as Beatrice either, so I'd probably not go for Maeve or Conor! Rory is nice in an Ulster accent and so is Niamh and Aoife. I'd probably go for those (but they aren't my babies).

It is also really exciting to be having triplets whatever you call them Smile

@MalcolmTuckersDisdainfulSneer We’re in south Belfast and more than likely will come back here when we move home from Canada (determined for my kids to continue the Methody tradition!) so pronunciation of Maeve shouldn’t be a big issue

Niamh/Aoife I’ve never been a fan of as they seem to be absolutely everywhere. DSis has a Rory so that’s out of the question unfortunately! Considering Patrick though. I’ve only ever met one or 2 Maeves (and they’re both lovely people) so that’s always been a big draw

Conor, Maeve & Fiadh flow beautifully together. Beatrice is like the odd one out. I’d save that for a middle name and give them all Irish names.

user1492757084 · 30/12/2023 13:46

I love your names as they are.

Alternatives..
Alexander Conor, Maeve Annabel and Beatrice Fiadh
Conor Alexander, Maeve Beatrice and Fiadh Catriona
Alexander Conor, Beatrice Fiadh and Camilla Maeve
Conor Alexander, Fiadh Bridget and Beatrice Isabel
Alexander Conor, Maeve Eliza and Beatrice Fiadh
Colin Alexander, Bridget Maeve and Eliza Beatrice

rainbowstardrops · 30/12/2023 13:44

Congratulations on triplets!!!!
I think your names are lovely and they don't have to match or go together at all. They'll often be referred to as 'the triplets' probably, so it's good that they'll have their own standing.
I absolutely love Maeve.
Beatrice is fine, as is Conor. I'd personally go for Ciaran maybe but that's just me!
Good luck and I hope all goes smoothly!!!

Lovely names. I would stick with your original 3 names. How exciting to be expecting triplets. The triplet mum in our local twin club is like a celeb.

I wouldn’t know how to pronounce Fiadh but like many names, after being told once, would remember, so don’t worry too much about spelling…

MerryChristmasToYou · 30/12/2023 13:17

Don't forget, your children will be in class with children from all sorts of different heritages, with names like Xochitl, Boleslaw, Aadhya, etc.
Really?

Dustyblue · 30/12/2023 03:55

Wow, triplets! You must be in a whirl of planning for everything about to happen!

I like all your names. But the non-Irish will struggle with Fiadh. I only knew how to pronounce it b/c I spend too much time on MN.

Then again people always have an opinion. I named my son Declan (we're not Irish) and Irish people have scolded me for using such an "old man" name on a baby 😂You can't win, go with what you like.

Edited

@Dustyblue Yes, nerves and excitement in equal measures at the minute! Still can’t believe it - twins weren’t out of the realms of possibility as they run in both DH and my family but triplets was certainly a big surprise! The worry of struggling with being outnumbered is certainly there but I just have to keep telling myself how lucky and blessed we are. Plenty of wonderful friends and family around to help out❤️

The Fiadh pronunciation has worried me from the start but it’s such a pretty name it would feel wrong not to use it. Even here in Northern Ireland a lot of people would struggle with it (probably even including me up until a few years ago!). Hoping though that having it as just a middle name will avoid it being a real issue

The irish and English opinions of the names are quite different, aren't they?

Conor and Maeve are solid, classic names to me (irish). Beatrice is a bit more unusual but lovely too.

They don't have to match.

You can spell Fiadh as Fia if you're worried the dh will cause confusion. It's still an Irish spelling. Fiadh is just older.

@TwirlBar

A very good idea - thank you for that. Yes.. the stereotype of Irish names still very much alive and well for some people on MN..! Thankfully few and far between!

And Conor Cruise o'Brien!

Hayzl · 30/12/2023 00:01

Conor Alexander
Charlotte Maeve
Beatrice Fiadh

These sound lovely together.

Yes 2 C names but the pronunciation is completely different.

resm · 29/12/2023 23:57

I think you should stick with Conor, Maeve and Beatrice. I disagree that they don’t all go together. Beatrice Fiadh and Conor Alexander are a perfect mix of both heritages and, if twins, would be seen as a good compromise. The extra blessing of a third child just means you’ve went with an Irish first name again.

Also, I agree with you about Connor being a surname. Just because it is spelled this way elsewhere, doesn’t mean you should forego the correct spelling. I’ve known a lot of Conors over the years and they have all been with one N (I’m also from NI). Huge congratulations!

BlowingAway · 29/12/2023 23:41

I like all the names and think they go together fine.
