Middle name for baby girl, Shiloh.

Samzzz · 29/12/2023 17:05

This is our third baby and all family names have been used on our other children. So I’m trying to find a middle name for her with meaning. My current list is:

Shiloh Louise (Louise is my middle name)
Shiloh Dove
Shiloh Joy

Suggestions are welcome. Thank you x

I agree. I'd pronounce it Shi-low.

Why should Shi be pronounced Shy rather than Shi?

Most other words are eg ship shilling etc

A consonant and a vowel following a vowel - in this case Shiloh (‘lo’ following the ‘i’) pretty much always means the first vowel is long (pronounced as it sounds in the alphabet). Unlike ‘ship’, ‘shilling’, etc, where the ‘i’ is short. Edited to add: there are no hard and fast rules in the English language, but this almost always applies.

Yes, some people will mispronounce it, but only once - they’ll get it right after being corrected.

If we all chose names that could be easily spelt and pronounced, we’d be working from a very dull, limited pool of names.

As someone with a very widely known name (think: necessary on a bike?) who always has to spell it when I tell it to someone - and who’s the parent of someone with another widely known name that can be pronounced at least three ways (think: Bonham-Carter) - having a name that people sometimes mispronounce on first meeting, or needs to be spelt, really isn’t the end of the world.

Having said all that, I hear ‘Shiloh’, I think Angelina Jolie, but that’s just me.

How about -

Shiloh Valentine
Shiloh Effie
Shiloh Saskia
Shiloh Marnie

Misspotterscat · 30/12/2023 13:33

How about Shiloh Eloise? Ads another syllable but still has a dreamily link to your middle name op?

Are you set on Shiloh? It could mean a lifetime of mispronunciation and spelling it out for your DD.

I love Shiloh. I would probably go Shiloh Anne, Shiloh Marie, Shiloh Felicity, Shiloh Georgia, Shiloh Belle, Shiloh Lark, Shiloh June or Shiloh Pearl.

BigBoysDontCry · 30/12/2023 11:17

Shiloh miriam
Shiloh lydia
Shiloh celeste
Shiloh Gabrielle

MalcolmTuckersDisdainfulSneer · 30/12/2023 11:09

It's definitely shy-low every time I've heard it and I don't know anyone irl who would mispronounce it (more than once anyway). It isn't exactly a difficult name! Two straightforward syllables.

Mumofgirls2017 · 30/12/2023 11:05

I like dove and joy!

shiloh pearl
shiloh skye
shiloh maeve
shiloh hope
shiloh jemima
shiloh aurora
shiloh iris
shiloh star
shiloh annabelle
shiloh esther
shiloh phoenix
shiloh athena

I was slow to post, and see others are also suggesting longer names.

GodDammitCecil · 29/12/2023 18:58

This is probably unfair, but I always think it’s funny when posters ask for a middle name, and then people come on to suggest Rose, Grace and May.

Nobody needs these three names suggested as middle names - they’ve been the default, filler middle names for a generation now! Grin

Out of your list OP, Joy works / flows best.

Otherwise, I am thinking a longer name could work well. As an example, but not necessarily, something like Evangeline or Genevieve.

anybloodyname · 29/12/2023 18:53

Shiloh May

The same way as Angelina Jolie’s daughter

I barely knew Angelina Jolie had a daughter let alone what her name is and how to pronounce it. 😂

MalcolmTuckersDisdainfulSneer · 29/12/2023 18:30

Just changed my vote to Shiloh Dove actually. It's a bit "hippy" maybe, but I like it a lot

MalcolmTuckersDisdainfulSneer · 29/12/2023 18:27

Shiloh Joy gets my vote! I do like Louise but don't like it with Shiloh (too many Lo sounds...shi-lo-lo).

How about:

Shiloh Eve
Shiloh Winter
Shiloh Luna
Shiloh Susanna
Shiloh Clara

Doublebiscuit77 · 29/12/2023 18:23

WinterDeWinter · 29/12/2023 17:55

And actually three syllables also work - it's just another two-er that doesn't.

Agreed. Here are some ideas. (I voted for Dove, it is a bit soapy but i was a big Tamora Pierce fan back in the day and one of her characters is Dove!)

Shiloh Felicity
Shiloh Cassandra
Shiloh Jessica
Shiloh Genevieve
Shiloh Madeleine
Shiloh Melissa
Shiloh Maria
Shiloh Verity
Shiloh Francesca
Shiloh Lucia
Shiloh Miranda
Shiloh Miriam

Longlive · 29/12/2023 18:23

Shiloh Jane
Shiloh Marie
Shiloh Julia

MissSueFlay · 29/12/2023 18:03

Shiloh Elizabeth
Shiloh Alexandra
Shiloh Victoria

WinterDeWinter · 29/12/2023 17:36

I think you could widen your net to 4 syllable names as well as a one-syllable ones OP.. Shiloh is great and strong and I think it could take it. I am tired and for some reason literally the only four-syllable name I can think of is Emilia but I know there are others!

AmazingDayz · 29/12/2023 17:19

Mumofteenandtween · 29/12/2023 17:10

How do you pronounce Shiloh? I really like Rose as a middle name but not sure it works with Shiloh. (Too “o”ey maybe.)

Shiloh Rose
Shiloh Grace

Bit unoriginal I guess but both pretty names that work well as a middle name.

How about just another name that you really like? Dd has our favourite name as her first name and our second favourite name as her middle name. I later found out that the middle name is the same name as my great great aunt but I didn’t have a clue about that when I named her it!

The same way as Angelina Jolie’s daughter

Delassalle · 29/12/2023 17:19

Not Dove.

Keep the middle name one syllable.

May, Joy, June... that kind of thing.

Or go all out and have Silver Lining.

NoraLuka · 29/12/2023 17:18

Shiloh is beautiful, but I also read Dove as Dave!
