Does anyone else have a name that, when given, was way ahead of its time?

I'm in my early 50s and my parents called me Lily Grace Surname

Now I know there's loads of Lily's and Graces's going way back when , but people are genuinely surprised when I meet up with them for meetings in person after emails (work related of course!) and I'm not 19!

I was an absolute anomaly in the 70s with all my friends who were Sarah, Louise , Claire and Julie

Anyone else?

It's funny as so many of the names that are popular now were friends of my gran who would have been over 100 now.

Bella was her next door neighbour and nearly every other woman in her (Scottish) village was Isobel, Isabel or Isabella, shortened to Belle, Bella or Isa.

Rose
Ivy
Ava/Eva/Ada/Ida
Phoebe
May and Mae
June
Evelyn and Evie
Florence
Molly
Annie
Peggy
Dottie
Eleanor
Isla
Violet
Iris
Josie
Lily

etc were all very common back then but could easily be the names of nursery or infant children now.

Archie
Alfie
Harry
Jack
Teddy
Arthur
Finlay
Lachlan
Rory
Wilfrid
Joseph

Were men in the village whose names would also not be out of place now amongst children.

Gran lived into her mid 90s and thought my friends name choices were "very old fashioned" when their babies started arriving. She was horrified at the name Phoebe-Mae (two amongst my friendship group) as she couldn't understand why "you'd cry a wee baby such an awd granny name!".

You guys are lucky, my name was popular TWENTY years before I was born. I always wanted pencil cases and lunch boxes with my name but they never had them. In the middle of Winchester Cathedral I had a strop with my parents, I said look you gave me a dated name, I could get a tea towel with my name! Or a hot water bottle cover.

bluesatin · 28/12/2023 21:57

I knew a Thelma in the late 1960s. She loathed the name and used her middle name, Frances.
My father was born in 1894 and was called Brian. I have never met one from the same era - I think most are from the 1930s to the 60s.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 28/12/2023 21:45

I knew a Norma about ten years ago who was in her 30s. Poor woman.

tillytoodles1 · 28/12/2023 21:44

I know a Grace who's almost 90.

crackfoxy · 28/12/2023 21:38

I know a 25yo Poppy. I thought unusual?

minicheddars87 · 28/12/2023 21:37

I'm a Juno so my name's pretty much never been popular at any time. Probably moreso in this day in age when most people associate it with a pregnant teenager now rather than the goddess.

My 21yo is an Isla though. There were no other Isla's at her school when she was there and now it's one of the most popular in the UK. Every Isla I've known has been a fair bit younger than dd.

Cattenberg · 28/12/2023 21:35

I used to know a Jessica who’d be well into her fifties by now.

Morechocolateneededhurry · 28/12/2023 21:29

Name changed but I'm a Bethany born early 80s. People used to comment that it was unusual and mix it up with Stephanie! And I could never get anything with my name on but in the 90s suddenly there was a fair few born.

I know a Gina in her 30s and Jeffrey in his 30s.

Mywhoopdeedoo · 28/12/2023 21:27

I know a teen Darren and a Gary in his 20’s

BlackPhillipa · 28/12/2023 21:27

My mum maintains to this day that my name was extremely unique and groundbreaking for its time.

About 2 years after I was born in the 80s 2 major pop stars had a combo of my names.

I've always hated my name. I wish I'd been a bog standard boring name.

weebarra · 28/12/2023 21:25

I know a ten year old Craig. Quite unusual.
I have a late 70's name (think Louise, Emma, Sarah, Claire) but my parents thought it was very original at the time. DH's sisters, he has 3, all have the most popular names of the time.

wite · 28/12/2023 21:23

My neighbour has a toddler Colin

doggiedoodah · 28/12/2023 21:21

I have an adult Esme . We didn’t meet another Esme for at least 20years !

LakeTiticaca · 28/12/2023 21:18

Nancy is coming into fashion again now. I knew a little girl called Nancy about 40 years ago and it seemed really old fashioned back then.
There was a boy in my class in the 60s called Beverley 🙄

MyLeftKnee · 28/12/2023 21:14

I know a 16 year old Craig, only one I know under 30

Riverlee · 28/12/2023 21:13

DinaofCloud9 · 28/12/2023 20:53

My friend is a Nancy which is unusual for a 46 year old.

Nancy Boy was a slur for effeminate or homosexual, although this seems to have dropped out of common parlance now. I guess that’s why the name wasn’t used much.

Victoria Coren Mitchell’s 8 year-old daughter is called Barbara.

I think it will make a comeback.

Their other daughter is called June

AmeliaEarhart · 28/12/2023 20:55

I went to school with a Poppy who was born in the late 70s, so quite unusual then. I also met a Kai who was born in the early 80s. His mum was Scandinavian and we all thought it was cool and Viking-like.

Blinkityblonk · 28/12/2023 20:54

In other words, you can't predict which names are going to be suddenly popular, so all those worried about unique names are trying to outrun something outside their control!

SilverSimca · 28/12/2023 20:53

My sister was Erin in the 1970s when there were hardly any Erins in England, or certainly none we knew of (we are not an Irish or American family). She could never get anything with her name on. In the 2010s there were two Erins in DS’s class alone.

DinaofCloud9 · 28/12/2023 20:53

My friend is a Nancy which is unusual for a 46 year old.

Blinkityblonk · 28/12/2023 20:53

I have a name that at the time was very old-fashioned and unusual, and then went top 10 and everyone was called it for about 20 years, but now it's died down to the occasional name, so people expect me to be from that middle era age. I don't mind, I think it's a nice name anyhow, and so it's fine that it dates me to a certain extent (it's not Rachel but it's along those lines).

Crushed23 · 28/12/2023 20:51

DisplayPurposesOnly · 28/12/2023 20:24

A few years ago I met a Barbara who was in her 20s. I definitely expected someone older 😆 There was a lovely story to why her parents named her that.

Victoria Coren Mitchell’s 8 year-old daughter is called Barbara.

I think it will make a comeback.

I was born in the early 80's and was the only one i with my name in the whole of both my primary and secondary school. I ived in a city as well, so not like a small village where it could've been likely to happen. In fact, at primary there was one other a couple of years above me, but they were male.
