Does anyone else have a name that, when given, was way ahead of its time?

I'm in my early 50s and my parents called me Lily Grace Surname

Now I know there's loads of Lily's and Graces's going way back when , but people are genuinely surprised when I meet up with them for meetings in person after emails (work related of course!) and I'm not 19!

I was an absolute anomaly in the 70s with all my friends who were Sarah, Louise , Claire and Julie

Anyone else?

I went to school with an Edna in the 80s

Tiredalwaystired · 29/12/2023 08:58

My daughter’s middle name is Ivy. I remember my sister wrinkling her nose at it at the time. Now very popular! Daughters first name is still very uncommon although not out there.

BananaSplitsss · 29/12/2023 08:58

I have an old name but I was born in the 70s. Loathe my name but it’s apparently more popular now. As a kid I knew no one. As an adult I have known one other person with my name. I hate it .

Apparently, the rise in Chloe is attributed to Richard and Judy who would talk about their daughter, Chloe, on This Morning. People often took four weeks maternity before the due date then, so would have sat and watched This Morning (pre internet days).

cariadlet · 29/12/2023 08:52

My sister and I were born in the 60s. Our parents gave us what they thought were standard, classic names which would stand the test of time.

My sister's name has stayed in the same bracket but mine has turned into a 60s/70s name.

As children, we felt sorry for our cousin Megan who was saddled with such an old fashioned name but it became very popular in the 90s.

KStockHERO · 29/12/2023 08:41

Not me. I was born in the 1980s and have a very 1980s name.

But I know a guy called Kayden who is..... 74 😁

Bbq1 · 29/12/2023 08:30

Dh knew a Kerry (male). Must be 50 odd now.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 29/12/2023 08:24

I'm a Lisa born early 70s.
No idea if it was popular but it was definitely trendier my brothers and sisters really old fashioned names 🤣

SallyWD · 29/12/2023 08:16

I won't say my name but I was given one of those vintage names in the 70s (along the lines of Edith, Ada etc). All the other girls at school had names like Joanna, Sarah, Claire. I stuck out like a sore thumb. I love my name though.

tokesqueen · 29/12/2023 08:11

My friend, early 50's had the opposite problem too.
Whilst his friends at school were David, John, Andrew, Steven, he was called Malcolm.
I know a Vivienne in her mid 50's. This seems to be the name of the moment.

UnimaginableWindBird · 29/12/2023 08:06

My name was unusual when I was born, and I didn't meet a single other person with my name for the whole of my childhood. Then, when I was 20, it was the top name for baby girls born that year. The same thing happened to my sister who is 5 years younger than me. My parents were clearly exactly 20 years ahead of their time.

Mintygoodness · 29/12/2023 08:00

Our 23 year old is Raphaela, 20 years ago this was extremely rare in the UK (not so much in Germany, Mexico, Italy etc.)
Now just in the past 4 or so years I see Raphael and Raphaela mentioned on MN as possible names quite regularly.

PleaseBeADecentYear2024 · 29/12/2023 07:26

My name was popular about 30 years before I was born. I have never met a peer with my name, only older women. I only once met a younger person with my name ever. It's yet to make a comeback. I am not fond of it.

RuthW · 29/12/2023 07:10

My dd is 27. She has an 'old' name that everyone did a double take at. One old lady even told me it was cruel to name her that.

Her letter from a consultant was overlooked by the GP as he thought she was an old lady.

Today it's in the top ten!

garlictwist · 29/12/2023 06:57

I'm a Megan born in 1979. All the other Megans I know were 90s babies.

MyRealNameIsBarbara · 29/12/2023 06:44

I'm a Barbara, born in the 80s. It wasn't cool then and it isn't cool now.

A couple of years ago I had an appointment for a health visitor called Chloe to come to the house - imagine my surprise when she was actually in her late 60s! I had obviously assumed she would be younger than me, the first Chloes I remember started around what, 1995?

Maskedpotato · 29/12/2023 06:41

My sister Grace is in her 40s. It was virtually unheard of for babies when she was born.

ApplePippa · 29/12/2023 06:34

I was at school in the 80s with an Amelia. It was definitely an old fashioned granny name at the time. She hated it, and called herself Amy.

Fast forward a generation, and so many Amelias!

Famousperson2023 · 29/12/2023 06:17

I have the opposite. Only people in their 80s have my name, -I’m mid 40s. I hate it. It’s never going to come back and a few years ago my foreign born husband was highly amused when 5 babies born in the uk were given his very not British name and none were given mine

Yes pop I'm similar age to you and have one of your names. I hated it as a child as it sounded so old fashioned. My niece also has the same name.

hoobanoobie · 29/12/2023 05:19

Coral, early 90s. Still continues to be rare around here. I gave my daughter a historical name also rarely used around here.

wideawakeinthemiddleofthenightagain · 29/12/2023 04:42

I'm in my late 40s. Growing up, I knew siblings called Olivia and Imogen. I hardly dared to speak to them as their names were so rare and, in my opinion then, sophisticated.
At secondary school, a girl called Amelia started mid-year. I had never heard the name before and spent ages trying to work out if I liked it or not. I'm still not sure!

Spencer0220 · 29/12/2023 04:03

Me!!

I have a VERY common name now. Growing up, I was always the only one in school with it.

My mum is Swiss 🇨🇭 , so I was given a popular Swiss name, then unheard of in uk 🇬🇧

Now it's bloody everywhere!

heyheyheyy · 29/12/2023 02:52

Yes I do. I was the only one with my name growing up (I’m in my 20s). I think it was possibly considered a bit alternative back then, but I was never bullied or singled out for my name growing up, no one really had an issue with it. My name has become really popular since. I’m constantly hearing my name in public from parents calling out their young children/seeing people on social media name their children my name. A few people have named their babies after me, colleagues and friends, which is sweet
