Can I give my baby my dogs name?

We lost our dog and want to potentially use her name for our baby. The long version of the name is not how she was called by everyone. It’s not due to dog obsession although we miss her it’s more to liking the name and a shortened version (not the same as how the dog was called) we like that we can link to it as full name

@Seco2bab Have a look atwhat @RogueFemale has been saying.

It’s generally quite important to children to know that they are more important to their parents than anyone or anything else.

No one said the dog was more important. I said we loved her name. The variation of the name was never used with her so it wouldn’t be like ‘oh hey dog child’
I think you have taken this a bit far suggesting therapy. That’s some stupid American perspective of someone’s self esteem or worth. I give my under 2 affirmations every night and he is told multiple times a day how much he is loved. He’s also told off when he pushes boundaries too far…I’ll book in the therapy sessions now because I didn’t let him bite me yesterday

I was named after my parents' car! They thought they weren't going to be able to have another baby so gave the car the name they liked, then I came along so they gave it to me as well.

And if you think that, your children will absolutely grow up needing therapy.

Why would telling children that they're not superior to animals cause psychic trauma requiring therapy?

Katiesaidthat · 11/03/2024 15:37

Well, she´d be like Indiana Jones, named after the dog.
I do like the name Nell, though.

Children and animals are equally important. Humans are not 'superior'.

My beloved dog died when I was 6 months pregnant, and I seriously toyed with naming my child Dusty. I didn't.

I like Nell though, it's sweet.

Honestly, I wouldn’t. Children are more important than animals and naming a child after a pet confuses that.

My DGD is named after a dearly loved cat.Cat was quite a character and known to many friends and family members and no one make an adverse comment. DGD is quite happy with the situation.

timoteigirl · 06/03/2024 16:12

Why not? I was considering this. You name people according to other family members and sometimes pets are much nicer than humans.

misscriss · 05/03/2024 23:18

My oldest son has the same name as the dog my DHs family had when he was a child. BUT, it was also the name of DHs closest friend from the time he started school.

Surprisenewtcatcher · 11/01/2024 14:00

My dad was named after his parent's dead dog and he really dislikes it. (Not his name, the being named after the dog bit.)

Needtogrowsproutsfordecember · 10/01/2024 13:12

Possibly not if ddog is Fido or Sheba.

susanrosebush · 10/01/2024 13:09

It's fine. Our family dog was Lucy and my sister had a DD Lucie.

planetarynoodle · 09/01/2024 21:27

Nell is nice

Twelve8Ts · 09/01/2024 21:25

My baby is due soon and I will be using my dogs name as a middle name 😊

Seco2bab · 27/12/2023 07:02

I literally have no idea who Zoella is but her name is definitely not in my list 😂

I have a granddaughter and a dog with very similar names.
Although you'd never use the dog's name for a human they're both called by both names frequently

DifficultBloodyWoman · 27/12/2023 02:50

DH forbade me from naming DD the same as DC (DearCat).

That has not stopped me from calling DC by DD’s name and DD by DC’s name.

Go for it!

MaloneMeadow · 27/12/2023 02:47

Nell is awful and will likely see a huge surge this year due to Zoella naming her child Novie Nell..

theduchessofspork · 26/12/2023 23:45

A friend was called after her Dad’s old dog and likes her name, so..

Tootiredtogaf · 26/12/2023 23:36

I was named after the (very much still alive cat) 60 years ago.
First child so always puzzled as to how my parents couldn't find separate names for their first cat and first child.
Loved my cat and love my name!

Puffykins · 26/12/2023 23:31

I gave DD the same name as my pony. I think it's totally fine.
