Hi MNers, sister to Lucy due in a few months and we finally have a shortlist both I and DH love:

  • Elsa
  • Olivia
  • Hazel
  • Ariane

Which one is your favourite and why? Last name is short and common (think Jones).

Thanks

One of my family names is Elza, which is pronounced with a zz sound rather than ss - would that work?

Stress101 · 22/12/2023 20:19

All boring, sorry.

Definitely Hazel, lovely name. Olivia is overdone, Elsa a bit meh, not keen on Ariane.

Agree - Hazel is lovely and you rarely hear it these days. There is a little girl about 10 who I meet with her mum and dog on dog walks who is called Hazel.

When I heard found out her name I thought how refreshing is was not to meet yet another "Willow".*

Definitely Hazel.

Also agree with @Terningbay 's opinion on the other names, too.

*No offence to "Willow"ers - I'm just sick of hearing it.

My 5 month old daughter is called Ellia (pronounced Ell-ee-ah) so kind of similar to Elsa but not as common. I think it's beautiful 😊

MerryChristmasToYou · 22/12/2023 20:08

Thanks, @theduchessofspork .
I think Hazel and Elsa are a bit plain compared to Lucy. Marianne isn't my favourite name but I feel it's of a similar vibe to Lucy, and a lot classier than Ariane

Anna would go better than Elsa. Smile

The nicest is Olivia but it has been overused for a long time.
Hazel and Elsa are ok. Elsa a bit Frozen.
Ariane looks made up. Marianne is better.

Marianne is a good idea -

theduchessofspork · 22/12/2023 19:39

Olivia or Elsa - both popular but lovely and go with Lucy

Hazel always sounds harsh to me, and Ariane is a bit Disney

Mamasperspective · 22/12/2023 19:00

Hazel. Elsa is and forever will be Frozen lol

Jeelypieces20storeys · 22/12/2023 18:53

Ariane
Hazel
Olivia, then a long way down the list,
Elsa

Or what about Amelie?

muddyford · 22/12/2023 17:42

Hazel is lovely.
Elsa reminds me of the lioness in Born Free.
Loads of Olivias about, though it's a nice name.
Ariane is a rocket!

MariaVT65 · 22/12/2023 16:12

I absolutely love Elsa and only didn’t go with it for my girl as I thought people would associate it with Frozen. I actually got it from the barroness in The Sound of Music :)

I would steer clear of Olivia as it’s the most popular. I had the most popular name of my generation and I hated having loads of us in class, or now at work.

Amdone123 · 22/12/2023 16:09

I love Olivia. We have an Olivia Catherine. Also love Livia.
Love Lucy BTW.
I quite like Elsa.
Dislike Hazel and Ariane.

Anametolove · 22/12/2023 16:08

@Marylou2 I like Astrid but DH doesn't

Thank you everyone, I am removing Ariane from the mix, unfortunately someone told me it made them think about the aryan race and I can't unhear it.

The popularity of Olivia does bother me even though I agree it goes perfectly with Lucy.

I think my two contenders are Elsa and Hazel. Elsa's heavy link to Frozen doesn;t bother ME but would it bother a child with constant let it go and do you want to build a snowman is the question.

Hazel! Lovely and quite unique, I’ve only ever met one

Olivia is very early 00s and far too common. There are 4 in DD’s year group and I know many more

Ariane is one that I considered for DD and glad I didn’t use! She is 17 and was absolutely horrified when I told her I nearly named her it. Looking back it’s got quite a middle aged woman vibe to it in a bad way. Ariana is lovely though and nice nickname potential.

Elsa is nice but still quite reminiscent of Frozen

SallyWD · 22/12/2023 15:14

I actually like them in the order you've listed them

resm · 22/12/2023 15:05

Olivia and close second Hazel.

Marylou2 · 22/12/2023 15:05

Too many Olivias. Elsa reminiscent of Frozen. Hazel is lovely and quite like Ariane, would Astrid also be an alternative?

marshmallowfinder · 22/12/2023 14:55

Hazel, then Elsa.

Mumofgirls2017 · 22/12/2023 14:37

I like Hazel best but Olivia with Lucy.

LuluLemony · 22/12/2023 14:37

Elsa is my favourite.
Olivia is so so overused at least where I live.
Hazel is lovely.
I'm not sure how to pronounce Ariane? Arry-Anne? Arry-Annie? For that reason I'd say no to that one, although it looks very pretty written down.

Quickredfox · 22/12/2023 14:34

Olive or Lydia, if Olivia is too popular?

Mayhemmumma · 22/12/2023 14:27

Favourites are Elsa and Hazel.

Olivia is boring.

Ariane like the singer? Bit...chav sorry.

17caterpillars1mouse · 22/12/2023 14:27

Lucy and Elsa is lovely but I would be cautious as I heard a 3rd frozen film is being released next year

Lucy and Hazel is lovely

Olivia is nice enough but is very popular which ours me off

I'm not a fan of Ariane sorry
