Thoughts?

Given it is babycenters fastest growing name of 2023 I think people will learn how to use it.

strictly no it isn’t the French version that has an i not a y. But 24 years ago the z bales used that spelling and now is it becoming a popular name. Which actually is quite fascinating when you think about it the impact someone can have

Sandysandwich · 13/12/2023 22:53

In english Kylian doesn't scan as 'Killian' so I wouldn't use it as a alternate spelling.
Cillian is a known name, I wouldn't change the spelling to one that is way less recognised.
Killian is the anglisised spelling but Cillian works fine in english.

I knew a Febe (pronounced Phoebe) growing up, and the fact it is a name in greek did not stop people guessing her name as Feh-Beh or Feh-bee or Feeb because Febe doesn't scan in english and she was not greek. The same way someone not familiar with the footballer will read Kyle-Ian.

Hohofortherobbers · 13/12/2023 22:50

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks of the baddie in running man. Grin

AndThatWasNY · 13/12/2023 22:49

I know a Cillian spelt Killian who is as Irish as they get! I weirdly read Cillian as Sillian even though I know it's not.
My name is spelt "wrong" as my parents anglicised it. Its fucking annoying!

WhereIsBebèsChambre · 13/12/2023 22:45

It made me think of the Running Man
'Killian I'll be back'
"But only in a re run"

Saxendi · 13/12/2023 22:44

Agree unfair to your child to be given a name hard to spell and pronounce too!
Kyle?

dapsnotplimsolls · 13/12/2023 22:42

Giving your kid a name with ambiguous pronunciation is never wise. Think of how many times he's going to have to tell his teachers how to say it.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 13/12/2023 22:41

Kylie-Anne..... Keel-Ann or Sileeanne...???? will be what teachers ask for 13 years. Sorry.

Problem with the name in English ( as opposed to french) is that you have 'kill' in it.

It just means church.

ActDottie · 13/12/2023 22:39

No.

It makes me think kill

ColleenDonaghy · 13/12/2023 22:38

sunqueen97 · 13/12/2023 22:20

French variant of the name

I know the footballer uses this spelling but is it established otherwise? Genuine question, I don't speak French.

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 13/12/2023 22:36

Absolutely dreadful, however, your child, your choice.

Userxyd · 13/12/2023 22:35

Mbappe?

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 13/12/2023 22:34

Just stick with Kylie.

SgtJuneAckland · 13/12/2023 22:33

Kyle-Ian is the new Balonz

sunqueen97 · 13/12/2023 22:31

StillWantingADog · 13/12/2023 22:28

I would assume you were an Mbappe fan.

French variant of the name

It’s not a ‘French variant’ - it’s the name of one French bloke. It’s a younique spelling of Cillian

StillWantingADog · 13/12/2023 22:28

Wow the responses !!

Cillian
Kylian
Kilian

Are all variants that I know of, and love. But then, I do have French family and understand there are different ways to spell names outside of the UK.

I think it's a lovely name OP

I've come across 2 kids where I live so far who are called Kylian so not unheard of

Dare I ask where you live? Names follow certain demographics

Quartz2208 · 13/12/2023 22:24

It is growing steadily in popularity due to the footballer who is in the top ten best known footballers in the world (the World Cup finals of 2018 and 2022 for example) and set to come the summer become top 5. His friends certainly won’t have trouble pronouncing his name.

be aware though that the chances are others will start to have it. It rise is pretty big.

also shocked how many don’t know who he is

Well, there’s lots of Jayden‘s, Brayden’s, Caiden’s and Graysons’s, so that doesn’t help your case much
