I like it. It's just a variant of Cillian, popular in France. Lots of popular British names are actually variants of names that originated in other countries. Plus Killian is a popular and very accepted version used in Ireland, and you avoid the 'kill' at the start of the name.
I know a young Cillian, and I live in England. His elder brothers friends think he has the coolest name ever (presumably due to the footballer) so you'd be choosing a name looked down on by your average middle class mum, but probably pretty cool amongst his peers. Who do you think he will care most about 😂

HunterBidensBurnerPhone · 15/12/2023 20:26

As in Mbappé? It would be a big thumbs up from my DS!

Saggypants · 15/12/2023 20:22

Kylian pronounced Cillian (sort of) makes sense if you're a French speaker. I'm assuming you're in the UK speaking English, though, so everyone will think of Kylie/Kyle and say it like that.

The only Cillian I know changed his name at about 12 because he hated it so much. Due to the 'kill' factor.

monsteraa · 15/12/2023 20:18

It sounds like you wanted to call your child Kyle or Kylie but wanted to be a bit different and cool. I think it sounds pretentious tbh.

I don’t think so - having a football mad teen I hear and his friends talking about the players by their surnames only, which have become brands in themselves. I guess if you’re into brands and football in particular you’d probably know both names though.

Nobby Stiles - now there’s a blast from the past! 😊

See my football mad 11 year old has. Kylian Mbappe chant that he sings with his friends, Kevin de bury e has one loads on 442oons

but they would still know his first name though.

I just think it’s world cup finals that memorialise players and Mbappe has 2 off those for different reasons

Roselilly36 · 15/12/2023 19:20

Awful

I think quite a few could say Diego! But I see your point - but given the increase in popularity of the name I think enough would know and there is much more a tendency nowadays to use the first and surname (and not was always a South American thing anyway). I always knew it was Geoff Hurst, Nobby Stiles, Alan Ball, Stanley Matthews etc

wouldn’t pick it myself but it definitely as a spelling is becoming far more common

Pele was a nickname and how many people could tell you what Maradona’s first name was? Likewise, I’m sure many people have heard of Mbappe but couldn’t tell you his first name.

I would have pronounced it Kyle Ian. I have never heard of it. Cillian would be my preferred spelling,

TheCatfordCat · 15/12/2023 11:41

I've got star wars baddie Kylo-Ren in my head for some reason.

Op won't acknowledge any comments from posters who haven't heard of the footballer, but I'd love to know if Kyllian (2 Ls) doesn't fix the issue, people will know that that is kill ee un.

When he's 90 the 20 year olds won't have heard of bpappe

they have heard of pele, maradona, Geoff Hurst etc. World Cup glory elevates you to a certain status so the chances are he will be at least on football circles

workd cup final 2022 will be a game talked about

It's pronounced the same as Cillian just spelt differently

Is it a made up spelling? If so then no

mikado1 · 15/12/2023 04:52

While I've said I would use Cillian myself, people seem to be forgetting y is sometimes pronounced like i. Sylvia, Sylvester, as well as Dylan mentioned above. There are plenty of worse names and worse spellings.

addictedtotheflats · 14/12/2023 21:45

I knew how to pronounce that way of spelling it, its quite common, probably because of mbappe.
However I don't think I could have my childs name with the word "kill" in it.

SusanKennedyshouldLTB · 14/12/2023 21:38

Nineteendays · 13/12/2023 21:44

Looks like Kylie-Ann. I wouldn’t pronounce it like Cillian at all

Yep. Kylie-ann

HandyLittleGadget · 14/12/2023 21:37

It's a made-up name and sounds daft

KirstenBlest · 14/12/2023 21:37

@AllProperTeaIsTheftNot to this English speaker. Dylan isn't pronounced 'dye-lan'.
To Welsh speakers, the Welsh name Dylan isn't pronounced Dillun.

@sunqueen97 , it's a celebrity name and will be considered a bit naff, but if you like it , use it.

Scirocco · 14/12/2023 20:47

I like Cillian and Killian is ok as the anglicised version, but the Kylian spelling is one I just dislike.

It reads like it should be pronounced 'Kylie Ann'; even knowing the intended pronunciation, my brain still wants to start with 'Ky' rather than 'Ki'. And that sounds like a Kylie Minogue fan was disappointed at having a boy and wanted to shoehorn in a Kylie reference anyway.

Cillian or Killian reads much better, lacks the 'trying to be younique' cringe factor, and wouldn't date like Kylian may well do.

ChanelNo19EDT · 14/12/2023 16:40

Could you put two Ls in it @@sunqueen97
I think the intended pronunciation of kyllian would be much clearer. I get that there's a famous footballer but a lot of people haven't heard of him.

Eiris · 14/12/2023 06:54

First thought: football
I prefer the K spellings to Cillian, and it neatly avoids having "kill" spelling too. Winner!

Humphhhh · 14/12/2023 06:38

BalletBob · 13/12/2023 21:47

On the off-chance this is genuine...Your poor son will spend his entire life saying "No it's not Kyle Ian, it's actually Cillian" and spelling it out on a daily basis.

Cillian is a great name. Kylian is daft.

No they won't, because the vast majority of his peers will know the name because of Mbappe.

notanothernana · 14/12/2023 06:31

There are so many K names for boys at the moment.

Keilan
Kieran
Keanon
Keaton
Etc

I work in a school and get them all muddled up.

mikado1 · 14/12/2023 06:28

Those who say it's not pronounced the same, I've heard KM say he's name and it is the same as Cillian, just with a French accent, like Marie. Is that what you mean by different or do people have a completely different pronunciation in mind?
