Names similar to Katherine?

DawnieOwl · 11/12/2023 21:40

I have always loved the name Katherine and had it as my number 1 name for our baby. However, today DH has informed me that Katherine is the name of one of his former partners and therefore is obviously not suitable. Any suggestions of similar names?

Elizabeth, Alexandra, Josephine, Margaret, Abigail.

Basically it sounds like you want a long-ish classic name with different nickname options.

Petrina

Jane Austen always used the 'C' spelling, Catherine, in one case shortened to Kitty. Personally I prefer it with a 'K' but the Catherine spelling might help to differentiate the name more from your partner's ex.

Caitlin is nice, or Catrin (is that the Welsh version?)

Katherine (nn Kitty) is an Austen name, so anything of that vintage is 'similar'. Also add in the modern classics:
Elizabeth
Lydia
Mary
Jane
Caroline
Charlotte
Louisa
Anne
Frances
Georgiana
Georgina
Marianne
Elinor
Margaret
Henrietta

Serena
Abigail
Fenella
Francesca

I’d still consider Katherine or Catherine.
Did your dh’s ex go by Katherine?
If so what about Kate?
If it’s completely out then similar names to me are:
Victoria
Alexandra
Jane
Isabel
Felicity
Philippa.

Corina

That's my name. I like it. It's not popular/ common, but it's not unusual either. I do get a lot of mis-spelling but that doesn't bother me, I suppose there are just a lot of ways to spell it. I get called Catriona sometimes which is also a lovely name.

Celia24 · 12/12/2023 12:01

I'm Kathleen and have always preferred ir to the harder sounding 'rine'.

Mind you, I go by Kat, so it didn't matter much!

TenderChicken · 12/12/2023 09:18

I had a Caroline and a Katherine in my primary school class, and people mixed up their names ALL the time (despite the fact they looked nothing alike - one was Korean!) So clearly everyone felt those names were very similar!

Underhisi · 12/12/2023 09:14

I don't think it is obviously not suitable and if it is the name you love them I would still go for it.

N0TMYIDEA · 11/12/2023 23:08

I know this isn’t the point of the thread

but how can you know someone well enough to marry them and have a baby with them but not know the names of their significant exes? I assume it’s someone he lived with / was engaged to and not a girl he snogged behind the bike sheds when he was 15.
