Welsh/Celtic Boys Names

We live in Wales. My husband is Welsh, I'm English - we both speak the language to varying degrees.

We already have a DD, who has a Welsh name - slightly anglicised by the spelling.

I'd like another Welsh name, but I can't think of many I like for boys. Any ideas?

So far I have Dewi, Dylan and Eilif.

@GreyhpundGirl , did you mean Llewelyn?
I prefer the Llywelyn spelling.

GreyhpundGirl · 08/12/2023 15:34

If my daughter was a boy, she would have been called Lewellyn. My husband's side is from north Wales- his dad was called Hughie (there are a lot of Hughie Hughes's in the village graveyard! His uncle was an Emyr

PickledScrump · 05/12/2023 09:37

If I would have had a boy I would have used either Esca or Emrys.

janfebmarchapril · 03/12/2023 15:34

I love Emrys and griff

CaffiSaliMali · 03/12/2023 15:32

Macsen
Idris

We were going to have Ioan if our daughter was a boy. I love Macsen too, and Osian although popular. Of your names, I prefer Dylan, I also know little ones called Elis/Harri/Jac/Tomos/Nye/Idris

oldnorsesaga · 03/12/2023 12:37

I love Dylan and will suggest Griffin or Cedric.

Osian is and has been very popular. I know far too many to use it.

Yeah there's two Osian's in DDs year at school.

Osian is great, it’s from the Mabinogion. The bard of the Irish king who imprisoned Branwen.

UsualChaos · 03/12/2023 01:07

If you want to avoid ones with an 'r', how about:
Osian
Cian
Cai/Caio
Cynan
Elis
Gethin
Owen/Owain
Lewis
Ilan
Ifan/Efan
Iwan
Mabon
Macsen
Nedw
Dafi/Dafydd
Sion
Ioan
Tomos

letshaveanicecuppatea · 03/12/2023 00:49

David / Dafydd
Ivor
Roald
Iwan / Euan

scarceiron · 02/12/2023 16:50

Tristan as another Celtic option?

I wouldn’t say that not being able to roll your Rs would be an issue in saying ‘Bryn’ especially (I’m a Welsh speaker and would pronounce it with an unrolled)

My dog is Dewi - he sometimes gets called Dewey!

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 02/12/2023 16:39

I like Seiriol too but it’s pretty niche.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 02/12/2023 16:37

Gethin
Arthur
Ifor

Riverlee · 02/12/2023 16:14

Emlyn - love this
Reece instead of Rhys
Griff
Hugh/Huw
Gareth

Almondmum · 02/12/2023 16:00

In reply to a pp I'm not sure Elfed would be a good idea, it would be like calling your kid Elmer!

Ianto
Ifan
Dafydd
Iago
Steffan

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 02/12/2023 15:54

Emlyn?

My dad was a Ieuan.

EarlofShrewsbury · 02/12/2023 14:19

Emrys

Cadno31 · 02/12/2023 14:15

How about Deiniol? Not overly used or too obscure. I know of two Deiniol's, both lovely boys!.

DaNiYmaOHyd · 02/12/2023 13:53

@ReadtheReviews , Cai is used. No reason why Caio isn't, and maybe it is. They're from Caius.

Deri makes me think of Pobol Y Cwm. Deri means 'Oaks'

I think Aneurin has a touch of an urine about it

DandelionPockets · 02/12/2023 13:32

Aneurin
Aeron
Idris
Sawel
Iago
Siarl
Taran

marshmallowfinder · 02/12/2023 13:29

I like Deri and Aneurin for boys.

ReadtheReviews · 02/12/2023 13:26

Small Welsh town I've driven through which I always thought would make a nice name was Caio.

DaNiYmaOHyd · 02/12/2023 13:22

Not sure if Gawain is Welsh but it's Celtic.

Alwyn is an English name that is used in Wales, as is Elwyn but they seem dated. Geraint is Welsh but is also dated - might be ready for a comeback . They seem like names of 70 yr old men.
