What do you think of the name Jamie for a boy?

I've always liked it, not a huge fan of 'James'

What do you think?

I like it.

I personally would use James and call him jamie,

jamie is a cute loving soft name, but there will be times in his life when he needs to be a James

It’s okay. I have a cousin called Jamie ( now deceased) and I only found out he was actually a James when I read his death notice in the paper.

I know more girl Jamie’s/Jaimees’s than boys.

I'd put James on the BC, but Jamie is fine for an adult.
Jamie isn't much used for girls.

My son is James, known as Jamie. He has the choice as to which to go by. It has never occurred to me that Jamie is not an adult name - I associate it with e.g Jamie Dornan and the gorgeous Colin Firth character in Love Actually. It really suits my son and in our case I’m glad we didn’t go with William (our other option) just because there are about 10 in his year group. If you like Jamie it’s your choice!

While I much prefer it as a diminutive for James, I wouldn’t have any concerns about Jamie not suiting an adult. I do find it a bit date though. Maybe just my experience but I know a lot of Jamies in their 30s or 40s but feel like young Jameses tend to just go by James.

I’ve worked with hundreds of Jamies, I don’t know or care if their full name is James. And especially in the current naming culture where the most recent top hundred had Harry, Archie, Freddie, Charlie, Alfie, Tommy, Teddy, Albie, Reggie, Ronnie, Frankie, Toby, Bobby and Ollie. Jamie sonically fits right in.

My adult son is called Jamie, he was going to be James for a long while, then DH said he wasn’t keen on it. I’m so glad we changed it, as he had 2 James in his class at school virtually in all his school years, after school clubs and sports teams. He really likes his name, it suits him perfectly.

LucyInTheParkWithDragons · 01/12/2023 07:05

Not great as an actual name, fine as a NN. I’m usually fine with NNs as real names, but Jamie will be really babyish when he’s an older child, let alone an adult.

Jacob could be shortened to Jamie instead, if you don’t like James?

DustyLee123 · 01/12/2023 06:52

It’s ok, but there’s plenty of females with the same name, so I wouldn’t use it.
