What do you think of the name Jamie for a boy?

I've always liked it, not a huge fan of 'James'

What do you think?

It’s lovely, one of our senior managers is called it at work. It gives him a boyish charm.

I love the name James yet really dislike the name Jamie. It’s just a personal preference. James is beautiful and classic to my taste. Jamie isn’t

lashy · 05/12/2023 21:15

I think it's a beautiful name. Good choice.

SushiAndSkittles · 05/12/2023 21:12

I love the name Jamie. There are plenty of adult men called Jamie without it being a nickname for James.

It’s a bit childish and embarrassing telling someone to F off on a names thread that’s for sure.

theduchessofspork · 04/12/2023 22:15

I’d call him James for options, especially as Jamie is catching on as a girls’ name. I like Jamie, but it’s quite sweet

It's a bit childish and embarrassing putting Jamie on the birth certificate instead of James

Cressie2 · 04/12/2023 20:24

Love but James for the birth certificate.

abbey44 · 01/12/2023 15:31

I have an adult Jamie (son), though he’s tending to use the formal James more often now for work and stuff. He’ll always be Jamie to me though! I like either form of the name, I think it s a classic and works for the child and the man.

dayone · 01/12/2023 15:16

Whilst I prefer James nn Jamie, Jamie is a perfectly fine proper name for kids and adults. It's the kind of name that I'd be surprised to find belonged to a 70yo but not anyone 50 or younger. It's taking over from Jim as the nn for James so in 20yrs time there'll be plenty of elderly Jamies!

therealcookiemonster · 01/12/2023 15:02

it's fine. at this point I think anything normal is a win.

Lightningrain · 01/12/2023 14:50

I know two adult Jamies. One doesn’t mind his name but said when he’s travelled in America people always assume he’s going to be female.

The other one is James on his birth certificate and goes by James everywhere now apart from with his family as they can’t get on board with the change from Jamie, even though he’s preferred James since leaving school. He thinks Jamie sounds too childish and really doesn’t like it so he’s glad he has the option of James.

I do know of a 10 year old Jamie (boy) and I’m not sure whether he’s actually a James. I definitely prefer James but most names I’d use the full name on the birth certificate just because I know of quite a few adults that have chosen to revert to that at some stage in their lives.

MaloneMeadow · 01/12/2023 14:49

I really like it but would definitely use James and have it as a nickname

StuartSheehyisBack · 01/12/2023 14:45

It is a steady name, nothing special but quite cute

TM1979 · 01/12/2023 14:42

I love it. It was in our top 5 for ds10. I like it for a girl too. Went to school with one years ago.
I don’t think it’s a babyish name for a grown up. I’m thinking of Jamie Rednapp, Jamie Dornan, Jamie Carragher, Jamie Foxx. And Jamie in Yellowstone!
DD15 says she’s definitely having a Jamie some day!

Historybooks · 01/12/2023 14:33

Its nice.

iamwhatiam23 · 01/12/2023 14:32

While i know its a name that can be used both sexes i have never met or known a female jamie. I think its a lovely name.

sensationalsally · 01/12/2023 14:22

I love the name and would never think of using it for a girl. Have only ever met one female Jamie (although obviously have heard of others). Anyway, who cares if it has become a unisex name?

WarningOfGails · 01/12/2023 14:00

Love Jamie.

NotFastButFurious · 01/12/2023 13:53

I know several adult Jamie's and it never strikes me a babyish name. I've only ever encountered one female one and that was a very long time ago (and everyone wondered why she had a boy's name!). I quite like it. I maybe prefer James but Jamie has a slightly vibe to it so I can see why you might pick it.

DuchessOfSausage · 01/12/2023 12:57

@keye , I think it depends. Some people like having the choice, some don't.

I don't understand why someone registers their children something like Evelyn and Theodore only to only ever call them Evie and Theo, but I would probably register names like Tom and Vicky as Thomas and Victoria.

DuchessOfSausage · 01/12/2023 12:31

Jamie Oliver is Jamie not James. I just looked him up on Wiki, having never thought about it before.

keye · 01/12/2023 12:00

I have never understood the 'put X on the bc but call him Y'

Just call him Y - Jamie.

If he wants to be 'known as' anything other than Jamie when he is older he can choose that in the same way you would be choosing a 'known as' by putting something else on the bc.

Doublebiscuit77 · 01/12/2023 11:51

I much prefer Jamie and don't really like James much. Jamie is a nicer sound - it's a great name.
