Ivy or Holly

Suchardchoccy · 27/11/2023 16:21

We are expecting our DD3 in June. We already have Rose and Sybil.
DH loves Ivy and Holly. I like both but I think Holly makes more sense for a Christmas baby? We had both been settled on Ivy if we ever had a third girl but would like to see what others think.
We both really like old fashioned names.
Opinions and suggestions are welcome please!

I'm not sure Holly goes with Sybil and Rose. I'd be looking at names from Downton Abbey to match your other girls! So, Ivy works better for me. For other 20s names, how about Alice, Mary or Isobel? Or for other botanical names, how about Iris, Daisy or Lilac?

OpenLanes · 27/11/2023 23:35

Holly will be a bit less common in this generation.
Ivy's are everywhere currently, and very similar to all the ava/evie names too

MarthaMayWho · 27/11/2023 23:32

Rose Sybil and Daphne?
Rose, Sybil and Verity?
Rose, Sybil and Iris?
Rose, Sybil and Celia?
Rose, Sybil and Annalise?

FoxClocks · 27/11/2023 22:09

That's funny as we are coming into Dec I was expecting this to be a Christmas baby. Both names are nice but if she is to be born in June I would go for a more summery name.

Coffeeandcakemum · 27/11/2023 21:59

I prefer Holly 😊 I've never been keen on the name Ivy but there are lots of them at my children's schools

princefamilypaper · 27/11/2023 21:17

Ivy

theduchessofspork · 27/11/2023 20:37

I like Ivy, always find Holly a bit twee, especially compared to the elegant Rose and Sybil

Maybe one bit of horticulture in the offspring is enough though?

Maybe..

Of the two, I prefer Holly
How about Iris, Mary or Clara?

Hotchocolatemousse · 27/11/2023 19:17

Azalea, Zinnia, Delphine, Camelliia, Heather, Jasmin, Lilac, Iris, Dahlia, Violet and Aster are my suggestions. Holly and Ivy have been done to death.

LadyEloise1 · 27/11/2023 19:14

I love Holly. I dislike Ivy.

HowNice23 · 27/11/2023 19:11

Ivy is pretty but makes calls to mind intravenous as in drip! I love Holly, or maybe Willow or Hazel or Sorrel for naturey names.

wellingtonsandwaffles · 27/11/2023 19:04

Ivy is a great choice. Holly is pretty but for some reason I think it’s a bit “young” for an adult.

Other similar old fashioned options Edith/Edie, Ida, Esme, Maeve, Clara

IWIllDoItNowInAMinute · 27/11/2023 19:00

I prefer Ivy with the children’s names you already have.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 27/11/2023 18:58

I have a Holly who was born in the middle of July.

Suchardchoccy · 27/11/2023 18:57

@SiennaMillar it is quite early to know the sex but I had a sexing blood test by the geneticist at 9 weeks as I am the carrier of a disorder that affects boys

Thank you to everyone for your opinions and suggestions!

Ivy goes well with your other names, as a vintage. However, we don’t live in the 1920s! Holly is lovely. And not a Christmas name.

threecupsofteaminimum · 27/11/2023 18:47

Ivy. Holly is common now

Leafpicker2000 · 27/11/2023 18:46

Ivy (or Iris)

justmyluck1234 · 27/11/2023 18:45

I think both names are equally nice I don't think I could choose either!

Although saying that... if I was to have a girl I was going to name her ivy (but we already have a holly )

UnbreakMyFart · 27/11/2023 18:40

Ivy isn’t as nice a plant name as Rose and Holly feels very modern compared to Sybil. What about…
Evangeline
Dora
Esme
Marguerite

Pemba · 27/11/2023 18:39

Oh I see what you mean, baby is due in June, you think that Holly makes more sense for a Christmas baby. You can choose it any time of year imo.

Pemba · 27/11/2023 18:35

Holly is a nice cheerful name. I don't really like Ivy much, although it currently seems so popular.

But, like other pps have asked, how is a baby due in June a Christmas baby? Typo?

SiennaMillar · 27/11/2023 18:33

Please may I ask, how do you know it’s a girl so early?

KirstenBlest · 27/11/2023 18:30

Holly. Ivy is overused and just blends in with all the Evies and Avas, is a thuggish weed, and the name makes me think of Ivy Tilsley.

Polly would go well with the siblings' names.

ChickenBhunaandChips · 27/11/2023 18:17

Holly because Ivy is overused and just blends in with all the Evies and Avas.
