Weirdest name you've encountered in real life?

Slightly piggy backing off another thread in this topic but just really curious about this.

Obviously we've all heard of some very unusual suggestions on this site and we can all think of a celeb that's opted for something very unique but in your day to day life what would you say is most unusual you've come across?

For me it'd probably be Maverick for a boy and Lavender-Lily for a girl.

I have recently come across someone who named their daughter, 'Harleymoon'.

OVienna · 26/11/2023 13:06

Paris Hilton has just named her child London.

I also don't get parents who go for Donald Donaldson or Robert Robertson. Have known one of each.

So you think it is OK to ridicule people as long as it is behind their back?

It's okay to discuss unusual names on a public forum that nobody is being forced to participate in, yes.

If you care about what strangers on the Internet think of your name or a name you like then you are a free person who can choose to not engage with threads like these.

When I was a teenager we had a (female) neighbour who gloried in the name of Merlin Wankiri.

Good thing that anyone who's name choice may get ridiculed wouldn't see it anyway since grown adults with an average or above intellect would know not to click on something that very obviously might upset them.

Handy how that works eh?

Thor (what if he grows up a weed?) or has a lisp?
Lakota
Siobhan - perfectly normal Irish name but her parents insisted it be pronounced as it was spelt so 'Cee O Barn'

Yep, I know a Sinead said Sin-need. I genuinely thought the girl who introduced had got it wrong and Sinead was rolling with it to protect feelings. But that was not the case.

I am not ‘triggered’ or upset.

I am offering my opinion that starting a thread to highlight name choices as ‘weird’ is sniggery, and unpleasant and designed to ridicule people.

You consider yourself entitled to do this. I am as entitled to view this as unpleasant behaviour and say so.

I knew of a teacher called Mr. Shaw-Twillie

I can only imagine the sniggering he faced.

He could have just used one name. I have known several people with double barrelled names who only use one part of it even though its not an embarrassing combination.

Years ago I met someone with the surname Cunt. He's not British.

I honestly knew someone called Robyn de Bank. Father was also called Robin de Bank. Recently met a family with children Arrow and Zephyr (I quite like Zephyr, tbh). Also knew someone with a child called Sangreal (post da Vinci code).I've come across some doozies in my day! I wish I'd written some of them down.

spanieleyes · 25/11/2023 07:23

Siblings called Mercedes and Bentley- apparently their dad liked big cars! Both are fine on their own, it was together that made them feel odd!

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/11/2023 07:21

I can't tell you any of the weird names I've encountered in school as a teacher for obvious reasons. Nearly 50 years ago I vaguely knew a couple of political activists who called their baby Tior because it was an anagram of riot. He'll be a middle aged man by now I wonder if he still uses that name.

Socksforxmas · 24/11/2023 10:14

Either way the point still stands that if you're easily triggered by someone not liking the same name as you then why would you click on a thread like this. The blame for any upset lies squarely with the person who chose to see something they know would upset them.

And the whole thing was made up to ridicule African Americans’ name choices.

nationallampoons · 24/11/2023 22:53

Barry Duck

Frazzledandfried · 24/11/2023 22:43

Little Lucifer and his sister Mazikeen.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 24/11/2023 22:41

Lovely.

Locallady2 · 24/11/2023 17:01

Renesme
Sylvester
Dusty
Hendrix
Siren

I don't necessarily dislike but these are just the unusual names I've come across. I cringe a bit at Renesme, not because it sounds bad but because it's from twilight originally.

bakewellbride · 24/11/2023 11:30

Eulalie

IGotItFromAgnes · 24/11/2023 10:30

All adults now, but the most unusual names I’ve met people with are:

Ocean
Peregrine
Gaylord
Tudor (x2 in the same relatively small workplace - never met anyone with that name before or since)
Mordred
Ulysses

I'm not triggered or upset I think it's a nasty premise for a thread and it brings out all the sneery people who are chomping at the bit to snigger at Pocahontas Smith or whatever.

the blame for being sneery and nasty lies squarely with the person doing it.

edit: itis laughable really. On the one hand we have baby name threads where posters claim no one will ridicule your child for having an "unusual" name and on the other hand we have threads like this, full of people doing just that.

Edited

So who is it that forced you to click and look? You ought to get the police involved if someone in your life is forcing you to read mumsnet threads.
